Welcome to “The Gentle Way,” a documentary short about a real-rodeo-riding-cowboy turned Sensei who, for the last three decades, has taught and been a beloved mentor at the same dojo he first began his practice in the heart of downtown Chicago.
The film is now in post-production and we need support to get to the finish line. Our ask of $5,000 goes toward editing, coloring, and audio design. The link for our gofundme is in my bio.
Timeline:
The editing process will take two months. Then we will be submitting to film festivals such as South by Southwest, Tribeca, Sundance, and Edinburgh International.
About the project:
“The Gentle Way” takes place in the Ju Jitsu Institute right in the heart of downtown Chicago. Sensei Hollis has been teaching the art of Judo in this dojo for over three decades. He is a legend to every student, or judoka, that passes through. Sensei’s passion for the art and dedication to the ethics filter through to anyone who meets on the mat or observes from the sidelines. As a meeting ground for technique and spirituality, this dojo has provided stability, safety, and confidence for so many people. We interview a few students, all from different walks of life, who sing the praises of Sensei Hollis and the art of Judo itself.
Sensei Hollis’ talent was not always centered on the mat. In his early years, he traveled the country as a true-blue cowboy, winning competitions all through the states. He shares some stories of his cowboy days, the racial tension of the times given he was one of the only Black cowboys competing. Through it all, Sensei’s spirit and faith in humanity stayed strong, and his zest for life remains to this day.
It is truly wonderful to see Sensei Hollis genuinely celebrated and honored. My filming partner and I share the sentiment, that we love to see our elders honored. We do think it is something missing from our social landscape.
Again the link for the gofundme is in my bio. Thank you for taking the time to get to know our film. Any bit of support is appreciated and brings us a step closer to our goal.

The Village TV series — coming soon.
The Village started in the Write On writer’s room, where a small team of 8 passionate writers got together to build a story about community, identity, and resilience. Led by filmmaker @directedbyericalmond & Trevor Jackson, They spent months shaping the pilot, then partnered with local filmmakers to help bring it to life. It’s been a real collaborative effort, combining creative ideas and homegrown talent to create something authentic and meaningful for independent TV.
