The second calf of the year has been born! We are so pleased to say that both mama and baby are healthy and thriving.
While we have to wait to introduce our first calf Ruby until she's able to graze on the grass and forage for herself, we hope these two will be able to run and play together soon š¤ š¦¬.

Bison calves are often called āred dogsā because of their reddish-brown coats at birth. That rubbing behavior youāre seeing isnāt just cuteāit helps strengthen the bond between mother and calf and reassures the calf itās safe. As they grow, calves stick close to their mothers for protection and to learn how to survive in the herd.

What youāre seeing is called environmental enrichment. My boss built this heavy-duty brush to help our bison manage their thick coats and shed winter fur. In the wild, theyād use trees or rocks, but a custom-built station like this prevents skin irritation and keeps them happy and stimulated.
