In the current exhibition “IDEAL CITY”, the nüüd.berlin gallery in Berlin-Mitte presents until April 16th 2026 a project by Berlin-based artist Birgit Naomi Glatzel in which public spaces from cities around the world are combined to form new, imaginary urban spaces. Architecture and locations from the areas of service, transport and leisure are removed from their original context and recombined. A central part of “IDEAL CITY” is the interactive component. Via a computer interface or by exchanging images on a wall, visitors are invited to design their own ‘favourite city’ by combining public spaces according to their individual preferences. The Brandenburg Gate can border directly on the beach in Tel Aviv, and a shopping centre in Tel Aviv can be located next to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. These free combinations open up utopian, sometimes absurd urban landscapes that question existing notions of urbanity, identity and belonging. Come by and build your own city! Open from Wed – Sat, 12 pm – 6 pm, admission free. IDEAL CITY Wenn Städte ihre Grenzen verlieren ⬇️Scroll down for English⬇️ Wir definieren uns über Städte. Berliner, Tel Aviver, New Yorker. Doch was passiert, wenn diese Kategorien verschwimmen? In IDEAL CITY beginnt genau hier etwas Neues: Identität löst sich aus festen Zuschreibungen und wird beweglich. Wenn Orte neu kombiniert werden, entstehen nicht nur neue Räume – sondern auch neue Perspektiven darauf, wer wir sind. Ist das politisch? Vielleicht nicht im klassischen Sinne. Aber es ist eine Einladung, Dinge neu zu sehen: zu hinterfragen, neu zu bewerten und anders zu verbinden. IDEAL CITY geht nicht von der perfekten Stadt aus. Sondern von einer offenen Stadt – als Möglichkeit, nicht als Versprechen. IDEAL CITY bis 16. But what happens when these categories begin to blur? In IDEAL CITY, something new begins: identity becomes fluid, no longer fixed. As places are recombined, not only new spaces emerge – but new ways of understanding who we are. Is this political? Perhaps not in a conventional sense. But it is an invitation to see differently: to question, to reassess and to reconnect. IDEAL CITY is not about the perfect city. It is about an open city – a possibility rather than a promise. In der nüüd.berlin gallery findet am Samstag, den 21. März um 16 Uhr ein Artist Talk (de) mit Birgit Naomi Glatzel statt, im Rahmen ihrer aktuellen Ausstellung “IDEAL CITY”. Kommt vorbei! In ihrem Projekt verbindet die Berliner Künstlerin Birgit Naomi Glatzel öffentliche Räume aus Städten weltweit zu neuen, imaginären Stadträumen. Architektur sowie Orte aus den Bereichen Service, Verkehr und Freizeit werden aus ihrem ursprünglichen Kontext gelöst und neu kombiniert. IDEAL CITY Das Spiel mit der Stadt ⬇️Scroll down for English⬇️ Was passiert, wenn du eine Stadt selbst zusammenstellst? Im Herzstück der Ausstellung wird IDEAL CITY zum interaktiven Erlebnis: Ein Touchscreen, drei Kategorien – Service, Traffic, Recreation – und unendlich viele Möglichkeiten. Jedes Bild steht für einen realen Ort. Doch mit jeder Auswahl verschieben sich die Zusammenhänge. Neue Räume entstehen, neue Verbindungen – und sogar neue Städtenamen. Aus Tirana, Tbilisi und London wird plötzlich Tilidon. Was wie ein Spiel wirkt, ist ein künstlerisches System: Städte werden zerlegt, neu kombiniert und ihrer festen Identität entzogen. Mit IDEAL CITY entwickelt Birgit Naomi Glatzel seit 2003 ein offenes künstlerisches System, in dem Städte neu zusammengesetzt werden. Öffentliche Räume aus aller Welt werden fotografiert, in ihre Bestandteile zerlegt und in neuen Kombinationen zusammengeführt. Traffic. Recreation. Service. Diese drei grundlegenden Funktionen moderner Städte bilden das Gerüst des Projekts. Aus vertrauten Orten entstehen neue, hybride Stadtlandschaften – Kombinationen, die es so nie gegeben hat und die dennoch erstaunlich vertraut wirken. IDEAL CITY ist kein Entwurf einer perfekten Stadt.
