Today is Endangered Species Day, so we want you to know about the most endangered bird we have at Birdworld - the Socorro Dove. This beautiful little chocolate-coloured dove is officially extinct in the wild. Many people don’t realise that there are species of birds and other animals which you can only find in zoos, as their wild counterparts were wiped out due to habitat destruction, disease, hunting, the introduction of invasive species, or natural disasters. Socorro doves were once found on an island called Socorro where the introduction of cats and sheep helped decimate their numbers, pushing them towards extinction. Now there are around 150 individuals left, all found in zoos around the world. Here at Birdworld we keep four of those individuals in our Silent Forest aviaries, and we are working towards finding them appropriate mates for the future, so that we can keep this sweet bird alive for generations to come.
