Part 2: onto some weird shit. HiTech – Honnypaq Vol. 1
Just so sick. I dunno this rules
Dev Lemons – Surface Tension
I’ve been hot and cold on Dev but this new one is so good. Really unique.
Aja Ireland – Cryptid
Really dark and weird. Clear SOPHIE inspiration (rest in peace).
Gelli Haha – Switchero
Half dreampop, half weird experimental electronic stuff. Very fun.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – Gush
Gush
Bronzclaw ISO - Iglooghost
I’ve also been DJing for fun in my free time this past year which has come with listening to a lot more EDM than I ever have before.
Stay Yope - Not Yes
Genres that I had just permanently written off as universally bad like dubstep have revealed to have some stuff that I actually really like.
Domuru - Tsuruda
I feel like every few years the lesson I keep relearning is that genres are stupid and getting your sense of self wrapped up in the specific type of music you listen too or the types of music you don’t like is an exercise in depriving yourself of great art.
Wtfuknow - Zep
Not to say you have to like all music. Just that you should try not to immediately discount something because it has some categorical association with something else you didn’t like.
Disk Utility - G Jones & EPROM
If you’ve made it this far thanks for watching. This G Jones Eprom thing that came out recently is insane. First three tracks sound like space jam on bath salts.
I still download MP3s like it’s 2008, so instead of a Spotify Wrapped, here’s a handful of albums I really liked this year:
Viagra Boys – Viagr Aboys They just keep getting better with every album.
Citrus Citrus – In the Belly of the Eternal Draw
It’s a bit of Gizz-worship, but done better than most who try.
Snooper – Worldwide
Super tight no frills punk. Proof that it’s still possible to make good punk that’s not so depressed.
Louie Zong – Seven Snake Songs Exactly what it says on the tin, seven songs about snakes.
Boko Yout – Gusto
Pretty fresh sounding rock fusion. Some, punk, some funk, some pop. Shades of Genisis Owusu or a way more upbeat King Krule.
13th Ward Social Club – Aprismo
Was surprised to find out this came out in 2025 after I’d been listening to it for a while. Sounds exactly like a 70’s dusty latin funk record from the you’d be hyped to pull at a dollar bin.
Empanadas Illegals – Sancocho Trifásico
Chaotic, funky weirdo cumbia. Found out they’re Vancouver-based while writing this. Very Meridian Brothers.
Aesop Rock – I Heard It’s a Mess There Too
Aesop’s second album this year, and the first he’s made in a while where it really feels like hes got some stuff on his mind.
clipping. – Dead Channel Sky
Probably their most accessible album in a long time but still super dense and intricate. Every listen reveals something new. Saw them live this year too. Super good show if you ever get a chance
Danny Brown – Stardust
Danny’s first sober record ever and by far the most insane thing he’s put out in a long time.
