👏It's official! The ASU BIOS Spring Semester was a success! Earlier this year, 12 students from @ontariotechu spent 10 weeks at ASU BIOS campus immersed in marine science learning 📚 The cohort engaged in hands-on coursework, snorkel-based fieldwork, and guided research projects, gaining an interdisciplinary skillset in the sciences and deepening their connections with Bermuda’s rich ecosystems. “I think on first pass, I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better than it has gone,” remarked ASU BIOS assistant teaching professor Stuart Robertson. “The students have been a dream in terms of the group that you want for this particular type of experiential learning program. It's fundamentally changed how all of the other courses are going to be run.” 🔗 Read the full article at the link in bio #internationaleducation #studyabroad #ontario #bermuda #marinescience #undergraduatecourse

On Monday evenings throughout the spring and fall, the Ocean Academy team hosts groups of learners ages 50+ to learn about Bermuda’s marine species, engage with local research, and collect plankton samples at sea as part of international @roadscholar programs. ✍ These scholars embody our commitment to lifelong learning and discovery, showing that it is never too late to experience something new and explore ocean ecosystems. ASU BIOS’s involvement with Road Scholar Bermuda dates back to 1983, with staff operating full programs onsite until 2015. Since then, we have hosted over 1,700 participants for two hour educational experiences as a part of their external weeklong Bermuda programming. This week marked the final evening of the Spring 2026 season, and our team looks forward to supporting Road Scholar programs later this year. #RoadScholar #lifelonglearning #oceanscience #bermuda

What is ocean acidification, really? 🌊 Students from @cedarbridge_acad joined us for a series of lab experiments to investigate this pressing question 🔬 They practiced lab safety skills, used a pH probe to measure the acidity of different solutions, analyzed graphs showing changes over time, and conducted an experiment to model how atmospheric carbon dioxide is absorbed by the ocean In a partnership with @waterstartbermuda , the team conducted field studies about soil chemistry, applying what they learned in the classroom to explore how atmospheric carbon dioxide impacts local ecosystems 🪴 🌀Students found that as more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, it is increasingly dissolved in the ocean, decreasing the pH and making it harder for some organisms, like plankton and corals, to build their shells or skeletons. 🌀This process, known as ocean acidification, remains a pressing challenge in a changing climate. We are lucky to have a cohort of strong young scientists on the case! 🙌 👉 Find out more about our educational offerings at the links in our bio #Bermudaschools #marinescience #STEMlearning #oceanacidification

Understanding how the ocean changes over time requires decades of careful observation. At the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, Rodney Johnson studies deep-sea ocean processes and long-term ocean change. Johnson is an associate research professor @asuschoolofoceanfutures and assistant scientist at ASU BIOS with more than 40 years of research experience. He manages and co-leads two major ocean monitoring programs, the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) and Hydrostation S, which provide critical long-term data used by scientists around the world to understand ocean circulation, chemistry and ecosystem change. With experience from more than 200 research cruises, Johnson’s work continues to expand our understanding of the North Atlantic and the processes shaping our ocean, an important part of our research 🌊

Susanne Neuer‘s connection with Bermuda has remained strong throughout her career. In 1994, she joined her very first research cruise aboard R/V Weatherbird II with what was then the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. That experience sparked collaborations and friendships that have shaped decades of impactful ocean science. Today, as the founding director of the @asuschoolofoceanfutures , Neuer is building a new academic home for ocean scientists, while continuing to strengthen the unique partnership with the ASU Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. 🔗 Read the full article at the link in our bio #ASU #OceanScience #ScientificCollaboration #Bermuda
