Our kick-off meeting with the partners from BIO-BUILT project was a huge success! We were able to share some of the local gems Fryslân has to offer. With our first stop being the vezelfestival in Nes, and our last stop being the beautiful city centre of Dokkum. Back at our place- Biosintrum. We had meaningful conversations about how to properly construct future bio-building lessons for VET students across Europe. With the main goal being: making youth think about the future of construction and the impact that building materials have on our earth.

Join us at the symposium hackathon on the 18th of May at Biosintrum! Mid-afternoon, participants, facilitators and experts will collaborate in groups to co-create bold ideas for peatland restoration camps. At the end of the day, groups will pitch their concepts to a jury — and selected ideas will join RE-PEAT’s pilot programme; building an intergenerational network across Europe to restore peatlands through hands-on camps. Working alongside RE-PEAT with a €10,000 budget to help design and attend a hands-on restoration camp in the Netherlands this summer. #YPOP #Symposium #peatlandrestoration #youthfornature #climatejustice

Young People Old Peat Symposium will take place at Biosintrum in the north of the Netherlands. Biosintrum is a regional knowledge centre where municipalities, entrepreneurs, educators and residents come together. The building itself is made from over 80% bio-based materials, making it one of the most sustainable and innovative buildings in Europe. The building also incorporates typha, a wetland plant that can help restore peat soils through paludiculture. Typha can be grown on rewetted peatlands and used for building and textiles — with companies like Ponda already turning it into bio-based materials. It is a meaningful place to host this symposium on youth engagement in peatland restoration, organised by youth-led collective RE-PEAT in collaboration with and supported by Biosintrum. #YPOP #Symposium #paludiculture #biobasedmaterials #peatlands

From interdisciplinary expert talks to a paludi lunch with a live sound performance, followed by an afternoon of designing your own restoration camps — all topped off with a peatland excursion the following day! Programme: Day One (18 May) will take place from 09:00 to 17:00 at Biosintrum, Ecomunitypark 5, Oosterwolde. Day Two (19 May) will be an excursion to Fochteloërveen in Friesland. On the first day expert sessions explore why ecosystem restoration matters and how peatland regeneration intersects with community resilience, intergenerational knowledge, and sustainable futures. Confirmed contributors include leading peatland scientist Hans Joosten, Friesian farmers in different stages of agricultural transition, various artists weaving themes of culture, health, and ecology and designers working with peat-grown biomaterials. In the second phase of the symposium, participants will collaborate with specialists to co-design peatland restoration camps, transforming dialogue into actionable solutions. The event fosters intergenerational exchange, hands-on learning, and collaborative knowledge production. Based on the final pitches of the camp proposals, a jury will decide on a camp that will benefit a budget to plan and lead their camp in summer 2026. On the second day there will be an excursion to Fochteloërveen in Friesland, guided by site managers. More details about the programme coming soon on the website and instagram. PS: We will also have space for poster presentations and related project installations. If you’re interested, reach out to us.

#bodem #landbouwbodem #biosintrum #minisymposium #bodemverdichting
