🌿 Columnea versicolor — a new species from Colombia 🌿 Excited to share our latest publication describing Columnea versicolor, a striking new species from the Cordillera Occidental of the Colombian Andes, notable for its richly colored purple corolla. Etymology. The name versicolor (“variously colored”) highlights one of its most distinctive features: a bicolored corolla with a magenta tube and dark purple lobes. Dark purple–magenta corollas have evolved multiple times in Columnea (Clark & Smith, 2005), and broader phylogenetic sampling will likely reveal additional examples of convergent evolution for this trait. I first encountered this species with my colleague and coauthor, Laura Clavijo, during a 2012 expedition to Mesenia–Paramillo. The footage featured here is from a 2026 expedition carried out in collaboration with colleagues from Missouri Botanical Garden, UC Santa Barbara, Universidad de Antioquia, and SalvaMontes. El proyecto “Conserva Aves”, liderado por la Fundación Bioconservancy desde la Reserva Natural Mesenia Paramillo, realizó una jornada de educación ambiental con 13 estudiantes de la I.E. Santa Inés, sede Gabriela Echeverry en la vereda La Mesenia, municipio de Jardín. La actividad permitió a los niños fortalecer sus conocimientos sobre flora, fauna y especialmente aves, mediante un recorrido de interpretación en el bosque altoandino. Durante la jornada se reconocieron especies como orquídeas, bromelias y árboles nativos, y se rindió homenaje a la estudiante María Isabel Rendón Arenas con la siembra de un drago (Croton magdalenensis), como símbolo de memoria y amor por la biodiversidad. Además, el recorrido dejó una noticia positiva: el registro de una especie de ave que no había sido reportada anteriormente en el municipio de Jardín. #bioconservancy #fundaciónbioconservancy #conservaaves

NAME THIS FROG One of the treasures of discovering a new species is that you get to name it. Well, in this case, that could be you. I’ve heard of organizations auctioning off new species, such as the new dracula orchid species Leonardo DiCaprio named after his mother, but this is the first time I’ve heard of one being left up to chance... in the form of a raffle. Each $1 gets you a shot at naming this new species of frog, found in the cloud forests of western Colombia. This tiny amphibian, the length of a paper clip, depends on horizontal rain for survival in the cloud forest habitat. Females lay eggs in bromeliads or forest litter where water accumulates. Unlike other frog species, this one bypasses the tadpole stage to emerge as fully formed miniature froglets. The raffle will close at the stroke of midnight Dec 31st, along with this bizarre year. The winner will be called January 1st, where they will get to choose the new name, for the new frog, in the new year. All of the money raised will go to preserving the cloud forest this frog and many other rare and endangered species call home. Ribbit. /ribbit

Dolichomitus pimmi is the fourth of five new species discovered for science at the Mesenia-Paramillo nature reserve. Named in honor of Stuart Pimm, Doris Duke Chair of Conservation Ecology in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Winner of the 2006 Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences, awardee of the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 2010, and recipient of the 2019 International Cosmos Prize—among the most prestigious honors in the environmental field—for his research on endangered species and his work to help reverse species’ declines by protecting their shrinking habitats. Dolichomitus orejuelai is yet another new species of Darwin Wasp from the Mesenia-Paramillo nature reserve. The specific epithet is a tribute to Jorge Enrique Orejuela Gardner, National Geographic 2007 Buffet prize winner for his work over three decades in Colombia on conservation education, protected area management and sustainable development. His accomplishments include the establishment of the cloud forest nature reserve La Planada, also helped establish Utría and Gorgona Island national parks, and the Quindío Basin and Calima River nature reserves.
