Rituals of Welcome 🙏🏾 3 workshops down, 1 to go!
As part of CuriousWorks’ Holding Space: Rituals of Welcome, we’ve been exploring what it means to arrive, belong, and connect — through the ancient Tamil traditions of Parai Attam (drum and dance) and Kolattam (joyful stick dance).
We’ve connected with incredible women from refugee backgrounds — hailing from Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and beyond — in a powerful exchange of movement, music and culture. Together, we’ve shared dance moves and songs, embodied the elements of earth, water, air and fire, and connected through rhythm as a universal language.
Each session has become its own ritual of welcome — grounded in nature, shared energy, and the spirit of togetherness. What we can’t always say, we can feel and express through movement. 🥁✨Here’s what Smrithi
@karma_sx had to say about her experience co-facilitating the workshops alongside Shyamla
@shyamla.e :
“Sharing the space with all the women was so heartwarming — there was so much love and care shown towards understanding each other’s cultural heritage. Being able to share our own experiences through cultural art forms allowed them to open up with their own, which was such a beautiful exchange and is exactly what is needed around the world”.
Thank you for inviting us to be part of this beautiful project and opportunity to connect and share practice. We look forward to delivering our final workshop this Friday 24th October at the Refugee Welcome Centre in Lilyfield
