A quiet moment with some gold leaf glinting in the afternoon sun. I really love collaborating with couples to create the perfect ketubah, and this couple suggested adding little gold dots to the pomegranates which I really loved. Also featuring some snuffly early winter breathes lol

There exists in Jewish tradition the practice of expounding meaning from numbers using numerology and mystical connections. Its how '18' gives us the Hebrew word 'life' (when their numerical position in the alphabet is added together, the letters of the word chai, chet and yud, equal 18). This means that this number we chose, 72, represents four 'chais', four lives.
Base is a community that acknowledges the multi-facet nature of Jewish experience. Like the famous saying "two Jews, three opinions", at Base we understand that "one Shabbat dinner, a multitude of different experiences" there are often four or many more 'lives' imhabiting our space at any given moment. Each valuable, each necessary, each holy. Even further, we understand that within each of us are a myriad of traditions, lineages, ideas, and experiences. Some gracefully alligning and complimenting while others feel set for a crash-course of conflict. We listen to those different parts of ourselves both as independent things within us and as they relate to one another in our understandings of self as the great Jewish Queer poet Muriel Rukeyser teaches us "The Universe is made of stories, not atoms."
We know that the bringing together of those four 'lives' are what makes our community unique. The blending and overlapping and learning about and with those 'lives' is what allows us to better understand ourselves, our own relationship to Judaism, and about the human experience. We know this because those distinct, indivudal experiences, those four 'chai - lives' that add up to 72 correspond with another phrase - kol yachad - all together.
We are only able to do this work of building community together. Bringing together this disparate parts of ourselves that we perhaps were told don't belong here, in order to bring together individuals who perhaps were told don't belong together, kol yachad - all together.

Putting the final touches of gold leaf on a ketubah to be sent out today. Wishing this couple a lifetime of love among the trees and leaves.

Spring! As @rachelbmercer knows, poppies are the best. This Brit Ahuvim brought me so much joy to make, and I hope it brings years of joy to @emma_mairr and the lovely Kelly. The flowers were collaged from maps of important places for the couple, and then tinted and painted. Mazal tov!!!
