Me as Subcommandate Marcos, holding a Palestinian Flag after Gillian Wearing, 2024 on slidefilm assisted by @los_mperez . In Miriam Hadduâs essay titles Beyond the mask: image-making, resistance and photography in Chiapas. Miriam states the sense of wariness towards the camera when Zapatistas came into the spotlight in 1994, Marcos knew the implication of the photograph. Especially for indigenous people. âOver the last decade this awareness has led to the gradual appropriation of the process of image-making on behalf of the photographed subject. In similar vein, this process has become recognized as an important politicized stance which has been adopted by members of the Zapatista movement in their efforts to re-appropriate the image and thus a sense of autonomy.â This was also an outtake of another image made but decided to include the Palestinian flag as a connection for to what being masked up with a keffiyeh is suppose to do, bring a sense or autonomy and as well as a connection to the EZLN unwavering support for Palestinian Liberation. If the history of photography has taught me anything is that photo can be a tool for oppression but as well as tool that can reimagine autonomy to oppressed communities. The image can be a weapon. As Gillian has photographed herself as icons of photography lets not forget the impact that the Zapatistas have done in the field of photography. #largeformat #4x5 #slidefilm #chicanxart #latinxphotography

re posted from @newyorkermag Today, Anaheim is best known as the home of Disneyland and the Los Angeles Angels. The photographer William Camargo (@billythecamera ) recovers the cityâs Indigenous and Mexican past and present by standing at seemingly unremarkable sites where he holds up signs that tell an alternative history. See more of his photographs at the link in our bio. #chicanx #contemporaryart #contemporaryphoto
