Had an amazing time at the 2nd @drakemusicorg DMLab NW Hackathon! Thanks so much to @hacmanchester for having us! We had four amazing projects: the TeMu/FreeMu gloves, a braille enabled musical watch, a MIDI wand for augmenting expression on the CMPSR, and a guitar modification for remote knob twiddling of an RE-20 Space Echo from a wheelchair. Thanks to all the people who turned up and made it so much fun!

Introducing our second presenter at DMLab London at @richmixlondon and online on 9th March... 🔨 Billy Payne Billy is one half of @billyandy_musicschool , a social enterprise working with young Disabled and neurodivergent musicians. He is also a creative technologist who loves building instruments. He started learning to make and code after attending the first DMLab North-West session over a decade ago and has since developed many accessible instruments. 💭 What will Billy talk about? Several years back, while browsing folk instruments upstairs at Johnny Roadhouse Music in Manchester, Billy knocked over a koto with his rucksack. Keen to placate the angry shopkeeper but unable to afford to pay for the koto, he bought a much cheaper instrument called the Pentachord, which turned out to be a rare accessible guitar-zither hybrid, developed and sold briefly in the 1970s. Believing this series of events to be highly serendipitous and possibly evidence that he was destined to meet this instrument, Billy has recently been working on recreating the Pentachord as a laser-cuttable, DIY friendly design. This project will form the basis of Billy's presentation, as it has been supported by Drake Music's 2025 Accessible Instrument Development Fund. 📅 Monday 9 March ⏰ 6.30pm to 9.30pm 📌 Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA OR live stream 🖇 FREE tickets: link in bio! Access: @rich_mix is accessible to wheelchair users. The event will also have BSL interpretation and live captioning. Please head to the Rich Mix website for full information, or email [email protected] to discuss specific access requirements.

Experimenting with tunings and techniques on this as yet unnamed new instrument (the Trichord?). A nightmare to tune at the moment and still a lot of refinements to make but quite pretty sounding and lots of room for sonic experimentation! Small dog on vocals at the end. @drakemusicorg

Decided I’m finally actually gonna start using this account for posting about projects I’m working on! Here is an instrument which I will be presenting at DMLab in London on 9th March for @drakemusicorg . The idea is that it lets you create several open guitar chords, each of which you can change with a movable fret. So far this only has one chord while I iron out the many kinks in the design! Turns out making instruments with materials and physics is way harder than with electronics and code! Sound samples coming…

Coming to Stockport this February, 'Electric Echoes' - an interactive sound installation and SoundWalk by artist @maya_chowdhry - invites you to listen in as a conflict between the River Goyt and the former Stockport Power Station reverberates through the vast network of tunnels hidden beneath the town’s streets. For centuries, the River Goyt fuelled Stockport’s industrial growth, powering the station while its own ecosystem was exploited. Through a sonic excavation of these underground remains, Maya invites us to listen as the river speaks back! This unfolding sonic argument takes place as an installation within the Stockport Air Raid Shelter, and a SoundWalk through the town via the Echoes app. Admission to the installation is FREE, with advanced booking required. Click the link in bio to find out more and to book your time slot. Dates: February 19th - March 22nd Join artist Maya Chowdhry for an exlcusive artist-led guided SoundWalk and Q&A: 12pm on Saturday 21 February - book via link in bio! This project has been produced by FutureEverything, commissioned by Stockport Council and Greater Manchester Arts (GM Arts), funded primarily by DCMS via Arts Council England’s Cultural Development Fund, GMCA Spirit and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and supported by community partners The Stockport Air Raid Shelter and Stockroom. Co-creators: sculptural fabrication and design Linda Devo (@lindadevoarts ), coder Billy Payne (@billyischilly ), mastering engineer Caro C (@carocsound ), and special thanks to participants from the Hong Kong Fellowship and @culturebridgemcr Bridge in Stockport. @greatermcr @stockportcouncil @stockr__m @acegram #UKSPF #soundwalk #soundinstallation #audioinstallation #artwork #ecology #environmentalcare #decolonialcleaning #stockport #stockporthistory
