Remembering Scott LaFaro, born on this day in 1936.ā

Best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio, LaFaro came from a deeply musical familyāhis father a big band musician. After early years on the West Coast collaborating with greats like Chet Baker, Hampton Hawes, and Stan Kenton, he moved to New York.ā

Within the trio, his conversational, countermelodic approach transformed the role of the bass. On recordings like Explorations and the Village Vanguard sessions, his playing captures that bond in real time. āļø ā

In early March 1962, Waltz for Debby by the Bill Evans Trio was released. ā

Alongside this fourth and final recording featuring Scott LaFaro, the trio of Bill Evans (@billevansofficial ), LaFaro, and Paul Motian also recorded Sunday at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961, at the legendary Village Vanguard. Both albums are said to be amongst jazzās finest live-recorded performances. ā
