Spent my birthday in Guatemala to hike the Acatenango Volcano. When we got to the base camp everything was fogged in and we couldn’t see nearby Volcán de Fuego at all - but at 9pm the sky cleared and the eruptions were amazing - then a hike to the summit to see the sunrise. Unreal.
Some spring and summer baking: Vanilla Cake, Oatmeal Lemon Bars, Strawberry Cake, Pan d’Arancio, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Cake, Cherry Pie Bars, New York Cheesecake — now, what to make for autumn and winter?
Walking the Tuscany sections of the Via Francigena, from Lucca to Bolsena. Sun, vineyards and olive trees, Italian hill towns, pasta and gelato, and great companions. A wonderful journey.

This week we lost our beloved cat, Herman. He fought a brave battle against lymphoma.
When I first saw Herman’s photo online almost 15 years ago I knew he was the one.
His foster family had given him the name “Monroe,” and I thought, “How quaint — they’ve named him after our fifth president.” But, no, they had named him after Marilyn Monroe because of his exquisite beauty. And while he eventually chose the name Herman for himself (cats do this!) they were right about his movie-star looks.
We have loved Herman more than I can say and are extremely saddened by his death. The house feels very empty.
Thank you, Herman, for all the joy and inspiration you brought us.
Some photos from the Argentinian side of Patagonia with my awesome sister @wandering_laurel Loved the National Park, Perito Moreno Glacier, the town of El Chaltén, and the absolutely insane wind!
Back from an amazing trip to Patagonia, hiking the “W” Trek in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park. Patagonia is stunning and … vast.
Cheers to @travellightmel & @enzocomedy — the best.
