🎙️ The spark for Steve Bilodeau’s love of music started at Canadian ice hockey rinks, long before his guitar and production work reached major hip hop records. He’s a longtime collaborator of T-Minus and a key contributor to multiple records on J. Cole’s new album The Fall-Off, building a sound that blends virtuosic guitar work with forward thinking production 🎸
🎧 In this Studio Talks interview, he opens up about his path from jazz trained guitarist to sought after producer, the story behind meeting T-Minus and J. Cole, what went into his contributions to The Fall-Off, and his advice for new producers 💡

39 Intro was the first time Cole ever flew me out to really work. For about a year before that I had been pulling up to sessions, being around, building… but this was different. This was the first time he intentionally brought me out.
6am flight, like four hours of sleep. We get to his place in NY, T-Minus knocks out on the couch immediately, and I’m just standing there half awake setting my stuff down.
Cole looks at me and goes, “Yo, let’s write a song, like how they used to do it. Just guitar and voice.”
I won’t lie — I was kinda nervous. I had gone from being the guy just pulling up to sessions to suddenly sitting in his living room, just the two of us, writing a song. And he’s one of my favorite artists.
So we did.
That morning we wrote the foundation of what would become 39 Intro right there in the living room. Just guitar and vocals.
Then T wakes up, we start building it out, and that’s when we had the idea to add the rock breakdown. That basically became the whole first half of the song.
Originally it was called Magnets. We’ve been sitting on it for over three years.
Sometimes things just connect.
