Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough 🎉
The amazing support that Sir David gave to the #HelpOurKelp campaign in 2018, narrating a short film to raise awareness of the issues facing Sussex waters, helped generate thousands of letters of support for the Sussex IFCA bylaw to ban trawling. At the time, it sparked huge press interest and brought national attention to the campaign.
A giant thank you, Sir David 🙌🙌🙌 for the pivotal role you played in helping protect our seabed. The bylaw became law in 2021, the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project was formed, and the rest is history 🦞🐟🐬🦞🐟🐬

A short clip from a film by Big Wave TV, marking the 5-year anniversary of the Nearshore Trawling Byelaw and Sussex Kelp Recovery Project (SKRP).
Five years ago yesterday, Sussex seas were given the chance to recover, reducing the pressures of bottom trawling and allowing nature to begin restoring the seabed.

A short clip from the film creatively produced by Big Wave TV, to mark the 5-year anniversary of the Nearshore Trawling Byelaw and Sussex Kelp Recovery Project (SKRP), featuring our Chief Fisheries Officer Rob Pearson.
5 years ago today, Sussex seas were given space to recover, reducing the pressures of bottom trawling and allowing nature to begin restoring the seabed.
These early signs give real hope that small changes today will lead to lasting benefits for our seas and sustainable fisheries.

Happy 5th Anniversary to the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project AND the @sussex_ifca Nearshore Trawling Byelaw. ✨🎉
5 years ago to this day, the marine life in Sussex was granted a reprieve from the pressures of bottom trawling, and the ‘keys to the seas’ were returned to nature to steer the journey to rewild the seabed. 💚
And although nature is only at the start of this long journey to rewild the seabed, there are already ripples of recovery. 🎉
Blue Mussel beds – ecosystem engineers - are spreading across the seabed covering areas greater than the size of multiple football pitches on the seafloor. 🐚
Black Sea Bream are on the increase despite once being targeted by the trawlers, and whose beds on the seafloor were devastated by the trawling nets. 🐟
We are hopeful that these ripples of recovery will in time become waves of success for our Sussex seas. 🌊

What happens when an ultra-endurance athlete swims the entire coastline of Iceland?
For the first time in recent history, we’ve teamed up with @rossedgley , who completed a 1,000-mile circumnavigation through sub-zero seas, to map the seafloor and reveal what’s beneath the waves.
By pairing human endurance with ocean technology, this collaboration helped generate new bathymetric data and environmental insights that scientists can now use to better understand habitat distribution, biodiversity patterns, and how these ecosystems may change over time.
If you need something epic to get you through a rainy Sunday...🌧
The Great Icelandic Swim with Ross Edgley follows @rossedgley as he attempts a 1,000-mile swim around Iceland over 114 days, in some of the most hostile waters on Earth.
