The paper was published in Nature. Raphael Mechoulam, the chemist who first identified THC, called the discovery “totally unexpected.”
That was 30 years ago. You never heard about it.
Here is the mechanism nobody explains correctly…
Your brain already produces anandamide. It is part of your endocannabinoid system, the same network THC activates from the outside.
Your brain makes it during deep meditation, long runs, moments of genuine connection.
The problem is an enzyme called FAAH, which destroys it within minutes.
Your bliss has a biological expiry date.
Raw cacao contains two compounds, N-oleoylethanolamide and N-linoleoylethanolamide, that inhibit FAAH directly.
Cacao doesn’t give you anandamide. It buys your own more time.
That’s a different mechanism entirely, and it’s why the effect is subtle rather than overwhelming.
Then there’s phenylethylamine. Structurally related to amphetamine. Your brain produces it when you fall in love.
In raw cacao it triggers dopamine and norepinephrine release, but it has a half-life of roughly five minutes before MAO-B metabolises it.
Cacao’s natural MAO inhibitors slow that process. The same principle that makes ayahuasca work. Just orders of magnitude milder.
Commercial processing destroys most of this.
High-heat roasting, alkalisation, sugar dilution, PEA is heat-sensitive and among the first casualties.
What survives in a standard chocolate bar is the flavour of cacao and almost none of its pharmacology.
Anandamide has been identified in exactly two foods on Earth: cacao and black truffles. One became a children’s confectionery product. The other costs €3,000 per kilogram.
