Printed by Big Image UK on Samba for backlighting.
We printed out the Austrian Alps on both sides of 100% cotton mesh gauze for the Det Ny Theater’s production of The Sound of Music in Copenhagen. Normally, this material is printed just on one side. However, for this production, both sides were printed due to the unique staging layout—two drops 27 metres wide by 7 metres high.
In the slides, you’ll get a glimpse of Big Image’s finishing workspace in action, bringing this backdrop to life. You’ll also see multiple angles of the finished product on stage.
The show is open until May 4—tickets and info here: https://detnyteater.dk/
What if you could reproduce any time of day on your stage, all on the same backdrop? Big Image’s Translight Series can transform the same scenery into dawn, daylight, dusk or nightfall—thanks to a few clever innovations explained in this video.
Rollit is Big Image’s unique stage solution that gives rigidity to straighten hanging backdrops while adding flexibility to move and store them. Its core is comprised of sprung light steel, forged in Sweden, sheathed in nylon. It slides into conduit pockets on the sides of borders or backdrops. This results in a clean, straight, and secure edge that prevents the drop from bending into an ‘hourglass’ shape. There are other uses for Rollit too, just ask us. We developed Rollit with the world’s top stages in mind, ensuring that productions can get the very best out of their backdrops.
What a remarkable year it’s been at Big Image UK, where we’ve been helping fill the largest stages in the world with beautiful, sumptuous scenery. Stages like the London Palladium where we helped create the vibrant and stunning ‘Hello Dolly’ earlier in the year and then later the flagship pantomime ‘Robin Hood’, to the National Theatre’s ‘Importance of Being Earnest.’ We have been busy and can’t wait for 2025. Happy New Year!
The sky is the limit with Big Image. Literally.
Big Image printed two seamless, 17-meter-wide skycloths for Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”, now at London’s National Theatre until January 25th.
