What a wonderful evening Monday was. A huge thank you to all who joined us on Monday for the screening and Q&A of 'Kerma'. We were so pleased to meet some of you and share our project with you, especially those who have a personal connection to Ingrid - this was really special for us too. Your feedback and support was so encouraging - so thank you again.
A special thanks to Ellie Kingston-Hogg, Chisenhale Art Place administrator for helping to organise, host and promote the event, for providing drinks for the event and for documenting the Q&A - your help and support has been invaluable. And thank you to Reece McMahon, Chisenhale Dance Space's executive director, for facilitating the event in the dance space and helping us with technical logistics. It's an absolute honour and privilege to screen 'Kerma' at Chisenhale. We hope there will be many more years of stories to unfold in this beautiful and historical space.
A special thanks also goes to Arthur Davies-Evitt for being a much needed rock throughout the project, many of the unknowns and risk-taking have felt like fun and manageable challenges with you onboard. It was an absolute joy to be hosted by you on the Q&A panel. Thank you to Roisin Larkin for always putting in 100% (despite a very busy work schedule!) and instilling so much confidence in me through your impressive expertise. And to Philippa Godsalve for the beautiful creative collaboration on the project but also for always lending so much support to the project beyond your department.

The film is composed by the incredibly talented harpist and composer Philippa Godsalve. It was an organic collaboration of flowing communication with a shared sense of depth and essence in Ingrid's story. Knowing Philippa's previous work, and her capacity to observe, interpret and translate into soundscapes, the score was always in very safe hands. Realising the score with her partner Arthur, who also produced on the film, added to the dynamic of expertise and sensitivity to narratival interpretation, as well as enriching the collaboration process.
Philippa shares some of her thoughts on the creative process of scoring Kerma...
“Ingrid’s reflections on her creative processes were an endlessly rich source of inspiration for my own. Ingrid explains that she paints not to create art, but as a discovery, a meditation and a process to find out within herself what it is to be alive. The score was developed to reflect the abstract, textural and spiritual nature of Ingrid’s work and throughout the process I often came back to her words about creative flow, finding out through experimentation what sound the film wanted.
The film is warm and intimate, so the music tries to convey a closeness towards Ingrid. The frenetic and rough surfaces of her paintings are echoed in sounds of audio jacks hitting metal harp strings, bowed cymbal and violin textures overlayed with fluttering clarinet and synths which in turn creates an aural intimacy.
With the invitation from director Alice for my own unlimited creative exploration, together with the philosophies of Ingrid, I have created some of my best most personal work which allowed me to grow and develop my practice and voice as a composer and sound artist.”
Friday’s at Bambi require serious dancing shoes, and several rounds of martinis!
