Cortisol is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands (small glands that sit on top of your kidneys). It’s often called the “stress hormone” because your body releases more of it when you’re under stress.
Here’s what it does: • Helps your body respond to stress (fight-or-flight response) • Regulates metabolism (how your body uses fats, proteins, and carbohydrates) • Controls blood sugar levels • Reduces inflammation • Helps manage blood pressure • Follows a daily rhythm—highest in the morning to help you wake up, lower at night
Why it matters
Cortisol is essential for survival, but balance is key: • Too much cortisol (chronic stress) → can lead to anxiety, weight gain, sleep problems, high blood pressure • Too little cortisol → can cause fatigue, weakness, and low blood pressure (seen in conditions like Addison’s disease)
In short, cortisol is a crucial hormone that helps your body handle stress and maintain many basic functions—but it works best when it’s in the right range.
