Thank you to old trees that hold stories within their bodies, to the ancestors, the amazing team supporting me this spring/autumn (depending on your perspective) and the quiet muses.
Excited to share the fruits of this āHear her calendar system, a year of thirteen monthsā at Magical Realism opening at WIELS on 28 May from 18:00
At the heart of my new video installation is the sycamore fig tree ā imagined as a more-than-human witness to cycles of time, resistance, and regeneration. Gabi Motubaās choral interpretation of my poem gives the tree voice, breathing life into a speculative, cyclical temporality ā one that looks back to colonial histories of land exploitation and forward to future imaginaries.
Keep making art. Keep Singing. Keep listeningā¦In times of tyranny, every act of being fully human is an act of radical resistance. @joseph.fasano šµšø
Love, Maybe opens this Thursday in Munich @alexander.tutsek.stiftung with a beautiful catalogue by @distanzverlag . Thank you @jana.j.haeckel for the invitation.
Iām showing Sepia, a photographic diptych, and The Chorus, a series of hand-blown glass objects among works of artists I admire.
These works reflect on my parentsā love story under South Africaās apartheid-era Immorality Act, which criminalized interracial relationships. Here, passing becomes an act of defianceālove as transgression.
Always
in the middle
of our bloodiest battles
you lay down your arms
like flowering mines
to conqueror me home.

+++ EMAF Exhibition: āHear her calendar system a year of thirteen monthsā by Bianca Baldi +++
The starting point of HEAR HER CALENDAR SYSTEM A YEAR OF THIRTEEN MONTHS (BE 2025, 00:19:07, Video installation) is the photograph of a sycamore fig tree (Ficus sycomorus) taken by Bianca Baldiās grandfather in Ambo, west of Addis Ababa, in 1939 during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia. Proceeding from this image, the installation ā which consists of video and a specially composed choral work by Gabi Motuba ā creates a dense network of personal memories, colonial history and ecological relationships in which private and collective narratives intermingle.
The title of the work makes reference to the Ethiopian calendar system, which has thirteen months, and opens up a view of different orders of time. Time doesnāt appear here as a neutral unit of measurement, but rather as a framework shaped by culture and politics which structures perception, memory and action. Calendars give order to the rhythms of life, establish cycles and creates systems of reference within which history is narrated and organised. As the installation links together different rhythms of image, voice and space, an open arrangement of perspectives is created in which ruptures are just as present as continuities and relations.
Baldi combines family traces, global history, intimacy and structural violence. The tree thus becomes a resonance chamber for relational experience: as an archive, symbol and active entity, it shows how different ordering systems become joined beyond time, space and species. The past continues to reverberate, the present can be experienced with all the senses and the future is imagined as a potential network of kinship, responsibility and connection.
The exhibition at Kunsthalle Osnabrück is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 to 18:00. Today at 16:00 there is a open guided tour. We look forward to your visit!

Next week, I have the pleasure of showingĀ āHear her calendar system a year of thirteen monthsā (2025) at the @european.media.art.festival on view @kunsthalleosnabrueck@gabi_motuba ās choral interpretation of my poemĀ sings the tree to speakāas a silent witness, older than wars and imperial ambitions, its roots and branches weaving time and space. Past, present, and possible futures unfold not as linear, but as interconnected rhythms of sun, moon, and seasons. History becomes audible not as a closed narrative, but as a polyphonic constellationāwhere fragments, memories, and perspectives are continuously realigned.
The work was produced by @wiels_brussels and supported by the 14th edition of the Italian Council programme, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture @creativita_contemporanea #ItalianCouncil

SLARG researcher Bianca Baldi presents her public doctoral defense: Play-White: Racial Passing and Embodied Images
Thursday, 22 January | 16:00 ā 18:30 | Kunsthal Extra City, Antwerp
Biancaās practice-led PhD explores racial passing not as a fixed historical phenomenon, but as a complex, embodied condition. Through studio work with glass, textile, pigment, sound, film, and photography, passing reveals itself as something lived at the surface of body and image. Protective and violent, strategic and exhausting, visible and concealed.
Her work also investigates how race, visibility, and classification are produced through visual, scientific, and bureaucratic systems. Exhibitions like Sea Through Skin show how opacity, distortion, and transformation resist fixed meanings, opening questions about memory, inheritance, ecological time, and more-than-human witnessing.
The defense will be evaluated by a distinguished jury: Diana Arbaiza, Hicham Khalidi, George Mahashe, Jyoti Mistry, Wesley Meuris, Petra Van Brabandt, and Kurt Vanhoutte.
Come support Bianca, witness this research in action, and be inspired by her exploration of seeing, becoming, and making.

"Older than the tongues that named me", a new sound episode on parastatal.art. Bianca Baldi is an artist whose work explores history, meaning, and knowledge production, often through narrative, fiction, and the reconfiguration of historical contexts and events. In conversation with Bhavisha Panchia, Baldi speaks about her relationship to writing and sound, the documentary image, and narrative. She reflects on how she navigates personal and collective histories of land, colonial exploitation, and belonging through sound and image, temporal constructions, and the embodied āvoiceā of a sycamore tree.
