Ad / About twenty years after the firm was founded, @quart.ch has published the first monograph on our work as part of its “De aedibus international” series. The volume opens with an essay by @holl_christian who reflects on the firm’s architectural identity and working methods. This is followed by presentations of eleven selected projects—from the very first design to a building nearing completion. @playwithdirk is responsible for the layout.

To accommodate refurbishment works and future growth, the University of Education Freiburg is constructing a new four-storey administrative and teaching building. Embedded in the green space between the student residence and collegiate building II, the compact volume preserves the tree population while defining the southern campus edge.
The building is consistently conceived as a contemporary timber structure. Timber beam layers combined with an in-situ concrete topping form wood–concrete composite slabs, while reinforced-concrete stair cores provide bracing. A high degree of prefabrication supports sustainable construction and is complemented by rooftop photovoltaics.

The new AWS depot on Gingener Straße mediates between residential and industrial contexts through a compact, clearly zoned layout. A multi-storey operations building forms a sound barrier and accommodates all heated functions, while a timber roof efficiently houses the waste management fleet, workshops, and storage. A timber-based construction and a green roof with photovoltaic panels support Stuttgart’s sustainability goals.

The new “Rathausbrücke”, designed as a deck bridge, follows the course of Rathausgasse and extends it to the other side of the river. There, it links up with the Danube Cycle Path and connects it with Tuttlingen’s city center. Wood, steel, and concrete. The sculptural bridge evolves from the triad of these materials. Truth to the material is key in the design. The deck is made of concrete, which is bonded to the timber structure below. The concrete provides a sturdy substructure for the pavement and ensures that the timber is reliably protected against the weather.
Careful design of the material joints between timber, concrete, and steel forms the basis for a permanently robust structure. Simple and assembly-friendly joining techniques ensure a top-quality execution of the innovative hybrid structure.
