Deputy Chief Dan Unger serves as the Operations Commander for the Berwyn Heights Police Department. Since beginning his law enforcement career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and community safety. Deputy Chief Unger joined the Berwyn Heights Police Department in 2007 after serving with the University of Maryland Police Department beginning in 2005. His extensive experience, specialized training, and dedication to professional development have contributed significantly to his leadership within the law enforcement profession. Among his many accomplishments, he is a graduate of the University of Maryland Police Academy, Class of 2006. With more than 20 years of combined experience in corrections and law enforcement, Deputy Chief Unger has advanced through the ranks of the Berwyn Heights Police Department, earning recognition for his leadership, professionalism, and investigative expertise. During his career, he also served as a sworn U.S. Marshal assigned to the Cyber Fraud Task Force with the United States Secret Service, further underscoring his reputation within the law enforcement community. Deputy Chief Unger is a graduate of several distinguished leadership programs, including the Metropolitan Police Department Leadership Academy and the Homeland Security Leadership Academy. He also holds FBI-LEEDA leadership credentials and continues to pursue higher education and advanced executive training, including completion of the FBI Trilogy Program, further strengthening his leadership and operational expertise.

Detective Lieutenant Krouse began his law enforcement career in 2003 with the Adams County Correctional Complex, building a strong foundation in public safety and corrections operations. In 2008, he transitioned to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a road deputy and worked in fugitive apprehension and extradition transport operations throughout the United States. He joined the Berwyn Heights Police Department on January 4, 2011, and has since taken on numerous leadership and specialized assignments. Currently serving as Detective Lieutenant, he oversees day-to-day patrol operations while also serving as a background investigator, Field Training Coordinator, quartermaster, and CVSA operator. His additional roles include Deputy U.S. Marshal, member of the United States Secret Service MATF Task Force, training and education coordinator, department armorer, certified Maryland firearms instructor, certified Maryland academic instructor, and adjunct instructor at the Prince George’s Community College Police Academy. Detective Lieutenant Krouse is also a graduate of the FBI LEEDS, a member of the Prince George’s County Police Chiefs Association, and serves on the committee for the Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executive Association. Known for his versatility, leadership, and commitment to professional development, he remains a key asset to the department and community.

Pfc. Wynkoop began her law enforcement career with the City of Greenbelt Police Department in February 2021, where she quickly established herself as a dedicated and capable officer committed to serving the community. During her time there, she gained valuable experience in patrol operations, community engagement, and investigations, earning a promotion to detective. In April 2025, she joined the Berwyn Heights Police Department, bringing with her investigative experience, professionalism, and a passion for public service. Known for her dependable nature and positive attitude, Pfc. Wynkoop continues to be a valued member of the department and an asset to both her fellow officers and the community she serves.

Pfc. Portillo began her service with the Berwyn Heights Police Department in January 2022 as a college intern. Upon successfully completing her internship, she demonstrated a continued commitment to public service by remaining with the department as a volunteer. In 2024, Pfc. Portillo graduated from the Prince George’s County Police Academy and was sworn in as a Police Officer. Since then, she has quickly distinguished herself as a dedicated and proactive member of the department. Pfc. Portillo currently serves as the department’s Community Engagement Officer, where she plays a vital role in strengthening relationships between the police department and the community. In this capacity, she has successfully planned, coordinated, and led numerous community-focused initiatives and events, including National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, “Coco with a Popo,” and the Senior Appreciation Lunch. In addition to her event coordination responsibilities, Pfc. Portillo consistently demonstrates strong leadership, organizational skills, and a genuine passion for community-oriented policing. She works collaboratively with residents, local organizations, and fellow officers to promote trust, transparency, and public safety. Her ability to connect with individuals of all ages and backgrounds has made her an invaluable asset to both the department and the community it serves. Pfc. Portillo’s continued dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm reflect the core values of the BHPD, and she remains committed to making a positive and lasting impact within the community.

Pfc. Lowndes honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, where he developed a strong foundation of discipline, leadership, and commitment to public service. Following his military service, he began his law enforcement career with the Rock Hill Police Department in 1998. In 2001, he continued his dedication to policing by joining the City of Greenbelt Police Department, where he served the community with distinction for two decades. Throughout his tenure, he built a reputation for professionalism, reliability, and unwavering service, ultimately retiring in 2021. Demonstrating that his commitment to law enforcement remained as strong as ever, Pfc. Lowndes chose not to conclude his career upon retirement. In 2022, he returned to service by joining the Berwyn Heights Police Department, where he continues to bring his extensive experience and passion for public safety to the community.

Corporal Herriott began his law enforcement career in 2007 with the Baltimore City School Police Department. In 2008, he lateraled to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, where he served with distinction until 2018. After a brief period away from law enforcement, Corporal Herriott joined the BHPD in 2021. Since joining the department, Corporal Herriott has taken on several key leadership and support roles. He currently serves as the department’s Chaplain, providing guidance, support, and resources to both sworn and civilian personnel. In addition, he manages the department’s police vehicle fleet, ensuring operational readiness, maintenance coordination, and accountability of departmental assets. Corporal Herriott also supervises the Public Service Aide (PSA) Program, a youth focused initiative designed for individuals between the ages of 14 and 21. In this role, he oversees recruitment, training, and mentorship, providing young participants with valuable exposure to law enforcement operations, leadership development, and community service. The program serves as a pipeline for future public safety professionals while strengthening relationships between the department and the community.
