'We Want the Funk!' has been recognized with two News & Documentary Emmy nominations- Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary and Outstanding Sound: Documentary. BGSTR designed the graphics for the Stanley Nelson-directed documentary from Firelight Media and PBS' Independent Lens, which traces funk music from its African, soul, and early jazz roots through its rise as one of the most important genres in music history.
The design challenge started with a deceptively simple question: What is funk? The film's answer is that you know it when you feel it, and we wanted that bold, unapologetic and decidedly stylish feeling in every frame of our work. Read more about our design process in the case study on our site.
Congratulations and good luck to Firelight Media and PBS!
'American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans' earned a Sports Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sports Editing: Long Form. We designed the graphics for the Prime Video documentary, which follows NASCAR's historic attempt to bring a Chevrolet Camaro stock car to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The design BGSTR created for the film leaned into the sophistication of Le Mans and the elevated experience surrounding the race, while grounding the story in the endurance and mechanics it took to get that stock car to the starting line. Read more about the visual identity we created for the documentary on our website.
Congratulations to our partners at NASCAR and Prime Video for bringing this incredible story to our screen and on your nomination.
BGSTR designed the graphics and visual language for 'Lost in the Jungle', the documentary from @littlemonsterfilmsofficial and @natgeo that tells the story of four siblings who survived 40 days stranded in the Colombian rainforest. The film earned two News & Documentary Emmy nominations— Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary and Outstanding Sound: Documentary.
The creative challenge here when designing was layering two realities. The search effort needed clarity, like maps tracing the Colombian special forces and indigenous trackers working to find the children. However, the children's experience in the jungle was something else entirely— filled with mystery, jungle spirits, and things that can't be fully explained. Read the full case study linked below for more details on our design process.
Congratulations to Little Monster Films, National Geographic, and the incredible craft partners that also received nominations for their work on this film. Watch it on @disneyplus if you haven't yet had a chance.
Designing for the winningest franchise in NBA history required a visual language that could move between decades, rivalries, and the cultural weight of a city. 'Celtics City' is a 9-part documentary from HBO Sports Documentaries chronicling the remarkable saga of the Boston Celtics from the team's founding as one of the league's original members to its triumphant 2024 championship. We're proud to share that the series has earned four Sports Emmy nominations.
BGSTR partnered with Left/Right and NBA Entertainment on the series and designed a visual system that could span 79 years of franchise history while capturing the essence of the team across eras. Never-before-seen archival footage of legendary Celtics players drove a design approach that showcased the material quickly and effectively, and our typography channeled the energy of scores seen by cheering fans throughout the decades.
Congratulations to our partners at Left/Right, NBA Entertainment, and HBO Sports Documentaries on the recognition.
Celtics City Sports Emmy Nominations:
Outstanding Studio or Production Design/Art Direction: Sports
Outstanding Sports Editing: Long Form
Outstanding Sports Camera Work: Long Form
Outstanding Sports Writing: Long Form
Finding the balance between the personal and professional can be precarious in any field, but few professions test it like conflict photography. 'Love + War' documents how renowned photojournalist Lynsey Addario has navigated that line for over two decades, and we're thrilled to share that the film has earned four News & Documentary Emmy nominations, including Best Documentary.
'Love + War' chronicles Addario's ascent in the male-dominated world of conflict photography while also showcasing her family life at home. BGSTR partnered with Little Monster Films and National Geographic on the film and created a design approach that focuses on holding both realities in the same frame.
Congratulations to the full teams at Little Monster Films and National Geographic on the recognition, and of course, to the iconic Lynsey Addario herself.
Love+War News & Documentary Emmy Nominations:
Best Documentary
Outstanding Sound: Documentary
Outstanding Editing: Documentary
Outstanding Promotional Announcement: Documentary
BGSTR's title sequence for 'Hey Beautiful: Anatomy of a Romance Scam' earned a News & Documentary @televisionacad nomination for Outstanding Cold Open or Title Sequence, but that's just one of four nominations the series received.
Outstanding True Crime Coverage, Outstanding Direction: News, and Outstanding Promotional Announcement: Documentary round out the list. Amazing to see our partners at @abcnewsstudios and @anchorent.co receive this recognition for skillfully bringing this compelling story to our screens.
The creative challenge with this project was how to authentically tell the story. The series essentially centers on text conversations and we needed the title sequence and graphic package to put the audience inside that dynamic of deception. At the same time, we were visualizing a tangled international web of scammers and victims that spans countries and identities. Finding a way to weave both of those threads into a cohesive visual language was quite the puzzle, and we're proud of where it landed.
All three episodes of the original documentary series are available to stream on @hulu , and the News & Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony will be held May 27th.
