Today is the birthday of Vincent van Gogh.
He was born in 1853; more than 170 years later, we’re still finding new ways to sit with his work.
He died at the age of 37, after years of struggling with his mental health. He only began painting seriously in his late 20s, around the age of 27. Remarkably, in just 10 years, he created over 2,000 artworks. A body of work that would go on to become some of the most recognisable in history.
It’s often said that he painted what he saw, but also what he felt, what moved, what stayed with him. That’s what continues to resonate, and why his work still feels so alive today.
He never lived to see his work fill rooms like it does now, or the many ways it continues to be experienced.
Now, instead of standing at a distance, we find ourselves inside it, catching something of what he might have felt while creating.
