One of my favorite things to photograph and experience are personal and collective expressions of faith worldwide. My passion for more intimate storytelling has led me to India, Ethiopia, Brazil, and Egypt, but one of my favourite projects was this story we shared from Guatemala, made with @beyondthebeat and @manuela_rodmel and her personal experience of Semana Santa in Guatemala - commemorating the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Photographing it is one thing, but nothing comes close to experiencing it - the thick, almost suffocating scent of incense hanging in the colonial streets of Antigua, clinging to your clothes long after you’ve left; bands marching slowly through the city, playing traditional songs that make everything feel like a kind of living funeral, heavy and reverent; and then the contrast - the most intricate spreads of flower art (alfombras) lining entire avenues, crafted with devotion over days, only to be stepped on and carried away in a matter of moments, becoming the sacred path for those carrying tronos (thrones weighing tons) - a quiet reminder that nothing lasts, and yet somehow, the beauty still does. Holy Week happens yearly around Easter and Semana Santa in Guatemala should be on your bucket list
