We've had an amazing time in London teaching and learning about co-design and co-production with Henrietta Curzon and London Borough of Newham, Vicky Brown, Mica Moore, Nina Wafula, Harriet Pugh and Ben Holliday from @tpximpact and facilitating with friends Soh-yon Park and Jenni Parker from @designhumanly at Toynbee Hall. We're grateful for the hospitality and beautiful venues. We've been struck by our similarities, shared challenges and the bright and hopeful energy of conversations about all things 'co' across London. Here are some photos (image descriptions in comments). Next: Berlin for Service Design Network 🛫 🇩🇪 Are you going? Say hi 👋 #CoDesign #GoodDesign

We had a great time hosting @georgeaye and locals, Ash Alluri, Louise Helliwell and Arlo Green to explore Doing Design Differently and how design might move from 'BYOE: Bring Your Own Ethics' to something more robust and accountable. Thanks to our friends at Folk - a strategic design consultancy. for the feed 🍲 If you're in Melbourne, Auckland or Wellington you can still catch George for a talk or workshop brought to you by CoDesignCo. We had the best time launching and exploring the Model of Care for Co-design on Gadigal Country. We gathered to explore: 💖How care shows up in our design, co-design or community engagement work 🌿How we can continue to strengthen care in our practice 📚What we have to learn from the cards and each other We also wanted to give time for talking, drinking and eating. We had quiet spaces for folks not feeling the social vibe and a bowl of fidgets on arrival. Have you got yours yet? Stay tuned for next event with @georgeaye from @greatergoodstudio Image descriptions in comments. #CoDesign #GoodDesign #BeyondStickyNotes

Who are we accountable to? Accountability hits differently in communities. As I (KA) prepare for a session in Canada on power misuse, accountability and repair, here are some (not all) thoughts about accountability. Community accountability isn't a flaw or a risk, it's a strength to honour, notice and protect. ❤️‍🩹 What are you experiences around accountability in co-creating? What resources and strengths do you draw on? 💪 Pssstttt look how we've used props and paper, not AI 👀 You can too ! Image description in comments.

A brand new podcast where I get personal, reflect on what’s changed for me and get a bit grumpy about some things we should do better. Thank you to Matt Healey and Tenille Moselen for having me. The last few years have been about shedding and growth, including some unhelpful ideas I picked up as a young ‘professional’ about hiding all of who I am and where I come from. As I listen to this conversation, I hear more of who I am. I hope you do too. Here’s a few takeaways. 🥡 Link in bio to episode.

Five ideas about co-creation in words and icons. Because we shouldn’t need to read an entire journal article or book to gain an understanding of the basics and try to stay accountable to the basics. As Skye Trudgett reminds us “rigour is looking in all directions.” What would you add? What words and icons come to mind? Image description in comments.

Intentional beginnings and honesty about what can and can’t be co-decided matters so much. And, sometimes we start work we shouldn’t be doing (yes, us too). So here’s part two of the series in using key principles for co-design. This time, focused on our beginnings and assessing the fit of co-design. What would you add to the questions within each principle? What do you wish was asked more often? 🪄 Image descriptions in comments. #CoDesign #CoProduction

Part one: Four key principles I (KA) first wrote about in 2018 and what they mean to me now. How do you use and understand these principles? What principles do you use in your work? Stay tuned for part two 🔑

A new series on using principles for co-design (carabiner not included, soz). In part one, I (KA) focus on four key principles I first wrote about in 2018 and what they mean to me now. I also share a few new principles I’m thinking about. In the next part, I’ll focus on using the principles before co-design. How do you use and understand these principles? What principles do you use in your work?

Today is TDOV. It’s risky right now in the world to be visible. But we deserve to be seen and known. And, transness brings strengths, too. 🏳️‍⚧️ Here I share some strengths. If it’s safe for you to post yours, I’d love to hear them. If it’s not safe, I’d love to hear them in my DMs or maybe they’re shared quietly among your people 💌

There is always more to learn and unlearn. We’re running our one-day, online Understanding Co-design course next week and still have a couple of spots left for you and your team. If times are tough, DM me to see if I can offer you a free or further discounted ticket. Our past learner said: “This training was a game-changer in how I understand and approach co-design. It challenged assumptions and provided clear, practical guidance for doing the work meaningfully. It gave us a shared language and a deeper understanding of what co-design is and isn’t.”

Reposting after accidentally deleting. Co-design isn't broken. But poor commissioning, bad facilitation and lack of follow-through is. This needs to change. Across all of our work, we notice this most in the Victorian Mental Health Commission Reform process. We hear so many harms and disappointment and notice a lack of commissioners seeking to learn about their accountabilities from beginning to end. More and more, we're meeting community organisations who can't name a single good experience. Here are some (not all) ideas on restoring authenticity to co-design because our communities deserve it and don’t wanna waste their time. What would you add?
