Fifteenth Rulers of the High Aerie
The shining city commands the Ireindian Strait, the narrow throat through which the wealth of nations flows. To one side lies the boundless Empire of the Steppes; to the other, the fragile Union of the Canyon Republics.
Not born of crown but of gold, the High Aerie was raised over centuries by wealthy merchants from every corner of the known world. Envied for its strategic position, it was conquered time and again by neighboring powers, until, four hundred years ago, it claimed its independence.
In place of a lineage-bound dynasty, it forged an oligarchic rule: from among the heirs of the great houses are chosen a king and queen, not by divine right, but by the wealth and influence required to secure the favor, or at least the neutrality, of surrounding great houses, whether allies today or rivals tomorrow.
Garments woven from the thousand-hued feathers of rare and resplendent birds are among the most prized treasures of the courts, symbols of wealth and power made manifest. From this splendor has blossomed a culture of exquisite excess: jewelry, painting, and music all thriving under the patronage and influence of a powerful aristocracy.
The High Aerie, resplendent in appearance, yet merciless to any who lack the coin.
