The Story: A young Black Afro-Latina woman navigating her queer identity, Catholic upbringing, and growing devotion to Lukumi Orisha practice in Brooklyn, discovers that faith, love, and selfhood are not opposites, they are different languages for the same prayer.
Synopsis:
Set in Brooklyn, BETWEEN PRAYERS follows Aisha, a young Black Afro-Latina woman in her early twenties who moves between two worlds, the Catholic church of her upbringing and the Lukumi tradition where she is discovering her spiritual heritage.
As she deepens her practice, carefully guarding the beads of Eleggua, Oshun, and other Orisha around her neck with growing reverence, she also navigates her relationship with Carmen, the woman she loves. When Aisha’s family discovers her elekes (sacred Orisha beads), the confrontation forces her to stand in the truth of who she is, queer, spiritual, and whole.
In a climactic moment before her family, Aisha declares that she has not abandoned faith; she has simply found it in more places than expected. The film culminates in revealing Aisha’s choices.
