A year after our first MABF — we’re back, a little different. We began with grassroots self-publishing from South China. This year, we reach toward Sinophone voices across the Asia-Pacific - with more than 30 new books from the region, and other Sino-diasporic and transnational contexts. Join us for a talk at NGV Federation Court @ngvmelbourne , 11:30am on 18 May, where I’ll be in dialogue with art historian Genevieve Trial @genevieveetrail , as we reflect on the thinking behind this new Sinophone collection, and the frictions it opens up. As a result, this medium is often endowed with a masculine tone and rarely associated with “her” practice. Indeed, within the context of Modern Woodcut Movements across Asia, male artists have largely dominated, while women’s participation has long remained at the margins. Even today, as gender consciousness gradually advances, studies that revisit and reexamine this history from women’s perspectives or through a gender lens remain relatively rare. In light of this, this issue adopts “her perspectives” as a point of departure by tracing the practices and experiences of women artists and practitioners in various Asian social contexts. The issue features 22 contributions from Chinese diasporic women and queer people worldwide. 𝑭𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒐𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑵𝒗𝒘𝒂 @pubis_project FanGoddess Nvwa explores the connections between fangirls and the goddess Nvwa, the legendary human creator in Chinese mythology. The zine revisits the fan term “泥塑” (clay modding), relearns the genealogy of the myth of Nvwa from a fangirl’s perspective, and recreates the totem “FanGoddess Nvwa” as a fangirl icon. By doing so, the zine aims to reaffirm a fangirl as a radical identity of creativity for women and queers.

It is a contextual adaptation of Hannah Arendt’s definition of *vita activa* – labour, work, and action. As a means of knowledge and aesthetic production, publishing is both about making publication (artefacts) and making the public (relations). In this understanding, vol. 1️⃣ of MMM features artists behind three resilient self-publishing projects – Prickly Paper, Nomad Papaya Books, and Reading My Panties / Not Just A Collective; vol. 2️⃣ features organisers behind three distinctive publishing events and spaces – Outland Publishing Fair, encounters, and Limestone Books. Together, they offer us a close look into how they navigate the Western cultural systems to build soft infrastructures for the incredibly diverse practices related to the Asian context.

A very brief trip back to East Asia somehow felt like a month—being surrounded again by long-time friends who have believed in and supported us since day one, and by the generosity, enthusiasm, and kindness we felt both inside and outside the fair. Thank you to everyone who came by our table and joined the talk! Even though we didn’t manage to walk around much during those hectic three days, the best books still somehow found their way to us—through amazing afterparties, neighboring booths, chance encounters at bus stops, and new friends who kindly brought their books to our table. Huge thanks to @tokyoartbookfair for pulling off such a massive event with such care and clarity. All those “meant-to-be” moments wouldn’t have happened without the immense work behind the scenes 🫶✨ Battery recharged, mind refreshed—now it’s time to catch up on reading 📖 (and writing ✍️), and get ready to see you again at all tomorrow’s parties, somewhere in the world 🌍 Big love!
