Over the weekend, ICE carried out immigration raids at multiple places across L.A., including Ambiance Apparel in downtown Los Angeles and Home Depot stores in MacArthur Park and Cypress Park, as well as near school graduations. Reports indicate that dozens were detained. Amid protests confronting these raids, the administration has deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles. Bet Tzedek condemns these militarized actions against families simply trying to live and work in peace. Everyone deserves to live free from fear, not be targeted in random sweeps or made part of a spectacle. We stand with our immigrant communities, now and always. Your rights matter, regardless of status. See our previous post for "Know Your Rights" tips when encountering ICE. Need legal support? Visit bettzedek.org or call (323) 939-0506. On the International Day of Families, we celebrate the many forms families take, including mixed-status, multi-generational, and chosen families. At Bet Tzedek, we support families through immigration and family law, including SIJS petitions, kinship care, caregiver rights, and legal advocacy for LGBTQ+ communities. We stand with families navigating complex systems that often fail to reflect their lived realities or fully protect their dignity. Today, we recognize caregivers, nurturers, and advocates, and reaffirm our commitment to protecting families in all their forms. #InternationalDayOfFamilies

Youth aging out of foster care face a high risk of homelessness. Research shows that 22–30% experience homelessness within a few years of leaving the system, and up to 46% by age 26. The transition to adulthood can be challenging. Many young people exit foster care at 18 or 21 without housing, income, or family support. Some leave a foster placement with nowhere to go and rely on shelters, couch surfing, or temporary housing. At Bet Tzedek, we support youth and caregivers through legal advocacy, including housing rights and access to public benefits. Today we are spotlighting HyunJoo Lee, Immigration Attorney for Foster Youth at Bet Tzedek! "I represent current and former foster children and youth who are undocumented. My job is to investigate their immigration history, help them apply for relief they are eligible for, and represent them in immigration court if they are in removal proceedings. The end goal is to help them obtain their green card. Sometimes my clients have complicated legal immigration histories. I research their specific issues and counsel my clients on their options. In this current climate, the biggest challenge is assessing risk and counseling my clients on those risks. I hope my clients feel like I am on their team and that they are not alone. I feel very strongly about my role as an advocate and centering my work around my clients’ specific needs and desires." Thank you, HyunJoo, for your hard work in assisting foster youth and helping us achieve justice for all! #NationalFosterCareMonth #FosterCareMonth #FosterCare

During Foster Care Month, we recognize the systems that support children and families, including foster care and kinship care. Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) is a legal pathway for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment to apply for lawful permanent residency. It is often connected to child welfare or family court cases, including foster care or kinship care situations. At Bet Tzedek, we provide legal assistance in SIJS cases, standing alongside young clients as they pursue this protection. May is a time to honor the many communities that add texture to our country’s shared narrative through various heritage month celebrations including Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month. We are also observing National Foster Care Month and Older Americans Month by raising awareness around the needs of children and families involved in the foster care system as well as the needs of older community members. Throughout the month, we will have weekly spotlights — including stories, uplifts, background on key legal challenges, and descriptions of the work being done to advance the rights of these diverse groups. Follow along this week as we highlight National Foster Care Month. #NationalFosterCareMonth #FosterCareMonth #FosterCare
