Betts (JP) Tinnitus 02 Release: March 27, 2026 I make what is called music, but I don’t think I’m really trying to make music. I think I want to express the space where sound turns into music. If music is something secondary, derived from sound, then what is the act of listening to sound itself, at its source? Is it something tertiary, after passing through music as entertainment? Or is it something like 1.5—somewhere in between? These thoughts came to me while listening to my field recordings and tinnitus-based work. A piece shaped by environmental sounds seeping into my room, and the sound of tinnitus. 私はたぶん音楽を作ろうとしているわけではない。音が音楽へと変わっていく、そのあいだを表したいのだと思う。ただの音が根源、音楽が「音」をもとにした二次的なものだとすれば、根源的な音そのものに価値をもたせて聴く行為は、三次的なのか、それとも1.5次的なのか。本作の制作過程でそんなことを考えた。

With several chapters coming to an end, I have begun a new production period. I am returning to emotionally neutral compositions, choosing sounds with restraint. This work explores how tinnitus—an unrecordable sound—can be expressed simply as a phenomenon. Five tracks, each precisely 9:58. Within severe limitations, I have discovered an unexpected sense of freedom. 様々なことに区切りがつき、制作期間に入りました。無感情な作品に立ち返り、音を選んでいます。今回はフィールドレコーディングが不可能な「耳鳴り」を主題にただの現象としてどのように表すかを試しています。全5曲、各9:58。厳正な縛りによりかえって自由を得ることを覚えました。 #fieldrecording #soundscapes #japaneseambient

@betts_jp I have changed my main profile photo. The pillar of water rising from a stone thrown in is the form of a single phenomenon. Through my daily practice and my ongoing engagement with my work, I have come to feel the impermanence of things. I am nothing more than a pillar of water that rises and then sinks away in a fleeting moment. The ripples that appear will eventually return to a still surface, as if nothing had ever happened. the album Moire. It has just been released. Please give it a listen. This is the seventh album by Japanese Ambient Musician Betts (JP). It is the first release in about a year. It is a work that compares the events that happen to us to the ripples that occur on the surface of water. We tend to categorize the events that happen around us as small or large, but I liken them to ripples. Ripples on the surface of water are large and small. But if you change your perspective and look at them from a distance, you will see that the ripples have lost that notion of size and are all small and nearly equal. And then they disappear and return to the surface of the water as if nothing had happened. However, many people, especially those who are so preoccupied with the ripples in front of them, tie themselves up in knots. They don't even notice that life will soon return to normal, as if nothing had happened. This work called "Moire" is about the emptiness of emotional ups and downs, and the cognitive distortion that makes us think that only we and the people around us are special, even though we are all equal. #fieldrecording #soundscapes #atmospheric #drone #guitardrone #ambient #japaneseambient #japan

Betts(JP) A musician from Japan. Holding the view that everything is accidental and does not resolve into intention, Betts expresses environmental sound and music without distinction. Humans are part of the environment. Even existence itself is just one phenomenon. Just as the wind makes a sound as it moves through the trees, humans also make sounds. They are different, if you say they are different; they are the same, if you say they are the same. Humans call it music. Sound is nothing more than vibration. In that sense, environmental sound is sound, and it is also music. Music intentionally played by humans is also sound. The shoegaze duo Yama No Shijima @yama_no_shijima , consisting of gamelan and percussion player Shouichi Iwamoto @shouichi_iwamoto and environmental music artist Betts(JP) @betts_jp , has released their debut work “39:00” digitally on Bandcamp on November 11, 2025. Side A (19:30) 2. Side B (19:30) This work is a recording of an improvised performance by a duo of drums and electric guitar. No editing or overdubbing was applied. It was recorded on the night of June 11, 2025, in the suburbs of Kurashiki City, one of Japan's regional cities. The theme guiding the performance was the timeline. We constructed a timeline by adding and rearranging the birth months and days of each member. Within this framework, we reacted to each other, entrusting the flashes of inspiration in that moment to sound. It overlaps with humanity's image. It is the figure striving to celebrate finite life while bearing countless trials within the vast flow of time, like a great river. By the way, as the duo's name ‘Yama No Shijima’ suggests, this recording was made at a facility atop a mountain overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Mountain weather is capricious and ever-changing. When the sea breeze, trailing torrential rain, violently shakes the trees, we gasp in awe at the silence that emerges at the vanishing point of that roar. And in this instant, we acutely feel the moment of life, this very moment. Now then, In the blink of an cosmic that is human history, And within that, we are but a faint drop— When the imprint of our 39:00 moment, that declaration of life, Is shared via the internet with others we have yet to meet, What kind of reaction might occur?
