Coach John Beam of Netflix’s Last Chance U died on November 14, a day after being shot at Laney Community College in Oakland. Mayor Barbara Lee described Beam as a “giant” in the city who mentored thousands of young people, including her own nephew, and “gave Oakland’s youth their best chance” at success. “For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family,” Lee said.

Wow, this one came unexpected 🥰
I mean, not that you can you expect any award, but the doc and festival market is so competitive and under-financed nowadays, that it’s almost impossible to produce human rights docs, especially features. It’s not about the money, but filmmaking is not a hobby and the regular job pays all the bills. I see colleagues changing industries, others looking for perm employment, and then there’s a the few shooting stars who grab the big attention at A-List festivals.
You invest your own time and money to finish your independent film because you believe in its message, not because it is financial viable. And believe me, I do struggle and often I feel I don’t belong in this circus of egoistic, self centered clowns - so I’d like to see this as recognition for everyone who helped to get this far. By going the extra mile. By being supportive. By believing in the cause. By leaning in there all the time, every time.
