When I opened PAGODA RED, I planned to share my discoveries from the markets in Asia with my hometown Chicago...little did I know, the antiques and art would resonate with amazing people all over the world. I’m so grateful for our rich and inspiring connections.

In 1994, I moved to Beijing to study Mandarin—I also began collecting. First, an apothecary chest with 60 drawers and hardware that told its age. Tremendous mentors helped me learn what was genuine and worthwhile.

Our amazing mother, Ann Nathan, a true force of nature for 98 years, passed on while in our embrace yesterday. She was the best, behind us in every way and approached every situation with elegance. She left a beautiful mark on whatever and whoever she touched. We are so lucky she was ours. Her fiercely independent, creative, adventuresome, loving, supportive spirit carries forward deeply in our hearts.
