Last week’s adventure. I posted it a few days ago and then realized it wasn’t quite finished so here it is again, hopefully done! Acrylic, charcoal and graphite on raw canvas, 42” x 36”. #bethshields #abstractart #rawcanvasart
What I’ve been doing the last 4 days. Charcoal and acrylic on raw canvas, 50” x 50”…in a strange and wondrous (I think) virtual reality.

We have three big, beautiful paintings by Santa Cruz artist Beth Shields on view in the gallery.
The photos give you a sense of the colors, but they don’t show the texture or the real presence of the work. In person, the scale and surface of the paintings draw you in. 💙
All three are from Beth’s “Dreamtime” series and made with acrylic, graphite, and oil on raw canvas.
Dreamtime: Storm at Sea, 48 x 48 inches
Dreamtime: Desert Deluge, 42 x 54 inches
Dreamtime: The Journey Home, 42 x 42 inches
Stop by to see them in person noon to 5Pm through the weekend.

Went to MK Contemporary Gallery in downtown Santa Cruz to take some pics of my work there. Here is me with two of my pieces, titled Dreamscapes: The Journey Home (42” x 42”) and Desert Deluge (42” x 54”), hanging with a wonderful sculpture by Rose Sellery titled Wage Scale. Also shown, also presently hanging at MK Gallery is Dreamscape: Storm at Sea (48” x 48”). Big thanks to Melissa Kreisa and Rose Sellery for supporting my work and the work of other local artists!

I posted this a few days ago thinking it might be done…it was not! Here it is after a few more painting sessions and today’s time in the studio…done…or as done as a painting can be without sitting for awhile and resting! 72” x 48”, acrylic and charcoal on primed canvas. #bethshields #abstractart #largeabstractpaintings #santacruzartist

I’ve been working on this large piece (4’ x 6’). Here it is in a virtual reality. I have no idea whether it is done. Knowing when to stop when working abstract can be a huge challenge. If I stop too soon, the painting can feel empty. I f I don’t stop soon enough, I can kill the energy of the piece. Thoughts?

Here I am with my piece The Journey Home, 44” x 56”, charcoal and acrylic on stretched raw canvas. Subtitle is: “The sweetest part of an adventure is the journey home.” This is part of the inaugural exhibit, titled Welcome Home!, in the beautifully renovated historic Porter building, the new home of the PVA (Pajaro Valley Arts) at 280 Main St. in downtown Watsonville, CA. Welcome Home! is the annual member’s show; lots of amazing art and artists! The opening reception is this Saturday from 1 to 3PM.
I love the way this piece looks against the historic brick wall!
