Pearl Beach by @beth.steiner , a poignant intergenerational story for young teens told in free verse, is yours on 7th May šŸ’› For Billie, summer has always meant Pearl Beach - foaming white waves and lazy mornings, old Aunt Edith and above all, her best friend Andy. But this year, Andy is determined to grow up. Billie wants to change too, but why does growing up feel like losing their friendship forever? Then Aunt Edith gives Billie the diary she kept as a teenager. Inside is a tale of extraordinary survival - of feeling persecution and crossing oceans, of agonizing betrayal and breathtaking first love. Guided by Edith’s past, can Billie find the courage to face her own future? #childrensbookstagram #freeverse #cleanteenreads #comingofage #bookrecs

There is something these beautiful books all have in common. They are non-fiction but they are captivating and riveting as if they were novels. These aren’t dry history texts but books that bring the fascinating, bizarre, tragic and wonderful to life. I have loved them all and hope you will too. What is your favourite non fiction read? #bookstagram #nonfiction #lovebooks

I am a lifelong reader. My husband? Less so. But it was really important to me that we fostered a love of reading and books with our kids. Here’s how we’ve done it: 1. We’ve read to them since they were babies. šŸ‘¶šŸ¼ From board books to picture books, now non fiction and chapter books, our kids get a book (almost) every night before bed, and often more during the day. Reading aloud and sharing books together have both been proven as very important in encouraging early literacy in children. 2. It’s not about the books we choose. My son is going through a real captain underpants/the day my bum went psycho/anything related to šŸ’© books. Are these the books I’d choose for him? No. Are they the most exciting for me to read aloud? Not quite. But Mem Fox, former children’s laureate and author extraordinaire, once said that it is important for children to find their ā€˜magic book,’ the one that gets them excited about reading. Yes, even if it’s about bums. 3. The library is our second home šŸ“š We go at least once a week and get a stupid amount of books, lug them home and lay them all out. That way they constantly have variety and something new to read without breaking the bank. #kidsbookstagram #kidslit #bookstagram #library #books

There are the books you read that are just okay, and then there are the ones that alter the chemistry of your brain. That make you laugh, that make you cry, that make you think. These are some of mine. #bookstagram #kidsbookstagram

She was just a child. A little girl, with a favourite doll. But a Nazi saw the doll and he wanted it for his daughter. It wasn’t even a choice. She parted with her beloved doll in exchange for a signature on forged papers. Angry and confused, she didn’t understand. How could her father give her most precious toy away? This is one of many stories Nanny told me as I sat with her, showing me her photographs and sharing her words. This story appears in Pearl Beach, along with many other little details taken from Nanny’s life. I can’t wait for you to read it. #historicalfiction #bookstagram #kidslit #kidsbookstagram

I was 22. I sat down with Nanny for hours; poring through photographs, listening to stories. I’m so grateful that we filmed it all. The character of Edith began from the stories told to me around a round formica table. I feel honoured and privileged to have told many of those stories in Pearl Beach, as Edith shares her history with Billie and both discover they are not quite as different as they believe. #kidsbookstagram #kidslit #bookstagram #historicalfiction

I’m so excited to introduce Billie, the spunky protagonist of Pearl Beach. Billie is on the verge of growing up, but isn’t quite sure how. And as her connection with her best friend Andy grows thin and she struggles with family relationships, everything she knows to be true will be tested. I love Billie. She is warm, funny, flawed and has a brightness about her. I loved meeting her everyday when I opened my computer or notebook to write. Who is a character that stood out for you as a child, someone you felt you really connected to? I’d love to know in the comments ā¬‡ļø
