A new textile artwork is slowly coming to life… ✨🧵 Over the next few weeks I will be sharing the creative process behind this piece using my Bernina 735, a variety of presser feet and beautiful built-in stitches. Today I started building the background layers with fabric scraps for appliqué, textured stitching and crochet lace details. I used my No. 20 Open Embroidery Foot with a decorative stitch so I could clearly see my stitching while topstitching the lace. For the circular fabric elements, I switched to my Open Embroidery Foot for free-motion stitching around the shapes. This is what I love about textile mixed media art — layers, texture, stitching and creativity all coming together in unexpected ways. I am incredibly excited about this artwork and cannot wait to share more techniques, ideas and inspiration with you as the piece develops. 💛 #Bernina #Bernina735 #BerninaRSA #TextileArt #MixedMediaArt #FreeMotionStitching

Preparing for my upcoming Textile Sea Horse Class in Cape Town means stitching LOTS of little sea horse bodies… 14 of them to be exact. Simple stitching? Not always so simple when you are trying to stitch around tiny curves and rounded shapes. I used to do this with a normal presser foot, constantly stopping, turning and fighting with the fabric. Then I switched to my Bernina Open Embroidery Foot with the feed dogs dropped for free-motion stitching — and what a difference! Suddenly stitching around those curved sea horse shapes became smooth, easy and so much faster. Even without a hoop, the fabric moves beautifully in every direction. In less than 30 minutes I had all 14 sea horse bodies stitched, cut out and ready to be stuffed for class. Sometimes creativity is not only about the artwork itself… it is also about finding smarter, easier and more creative ways to create. ✨ #Bernina #BerninaRSA #TextileArt #FreeMotionStitching #SeaHorseClass #CreativeProcess

What do you do when you need a whole collection of teacup doilies… but simply don’t have the time to crochet? ☕✨ You get creative 😉 Today I used my Bernina 735 sewing machine with the embroidery unit attached and explored the built-in embroidery designs to see if I could create my own machine-stitched doilies. I used three layers of dissolvable stabilizer to keep everything in place while stitching. Once the design was done, I rinsed the stabilizer out and left it to dry… and just look at that delicate, lace-like result! It will definitely work for what I have planned, although I think it needs one more rinse to soften it slightly. I absolutely love how versatile my machine is — switching from sewing to embroidery opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Creative solutions when time is short… and ideas are plenty ✨ Have you ever used your embroidery machine like this? #Bernina735 #MachineEmbroidery #CreativeSolutions #TextileArt
