Writing in Future, Symposium and exhibition. Writing as an artistic practice is becoming increasingly important at art colleges and in the art world. The symposium “Writing in the Future” and accompanying exhibition shed light on precisely this development: How do artists and authors work with language? Where do transitions, frictions, and new forms arise between text, image, technology, and institutional frameworks? #artandbooks #bernhardcella #artwork #artistcwriters

Cella is an advocate of artist books as a medium and has curated numerous exhibitions with and about artist books.[7] He has stated that a good art book can replace a visit to a museum, because it offers many possibilities for discourse and experimentation.[8] With projects like Collecting Books, Salon für Kunstbuch or Kunstbuch*Kompass, he changes the perception of the viewer towards the books that are included in the project. He often uses unusual re-arrangements to disorient the viewers in their viewing habits.[9][10] His works shift modes of production and distribution of current forms of visual art;[11] in this way he operated as a businessman-artist, who transcends the barriers between business and art.[12] He has made artworks that operate also as a fashion studio,[13][14] a hotel[15][16] and a museum shop. I don’t perceive any conflict between art and economy because both systems have very strong connections. It seems to be impossible to analyze both domains separately artists have always operated in both systems, which have different rules, but always are intertwined. Kolumba – “make the secrets productive!” – Art in Times of Unreason (15 September 2025 – 14 August 2026): Room 21 presents three works. Bernhard Cella, A Century of Injured Men (2022, artist’s book, offset print, Vienna) shows a panorama of convalescent men and questions heroic images of masculinity. Paul Thek, Plumed Serpent (1969, coloured chalk on blackboard, three panels) addresses transformation, death and water. Ecce homo (Cologne, c. 1460–1500, limewood figure) was used as a devotional image and makes torture and humiliation visible. The deliberately open design of the room creates emptiness and silence, enhancing the impact of the three works. #injured #emptiness #transformation #convalescent #death #water

Body to book is a NON-Calendar by Bernhard Cella that challenges conventional notions of time measurement. This unconventional approach, which contains neither years nor specific dates, allows the user to redefine their relationship with time. The Non-Calendar disrupts the standard format of calendars by removing the constraints of structured time. With 23 indeterminate months, it encourages a playful, open and contemplative approach to chronology. Without fixed months or days, this publication project invites timeless reflection, subjective temporality and creative reinterpretation of time itself.
