French artist Bernar Venet has always explored the creative potential of chance. In his Accident series, begun in 1996, Venet arranges steel bars against a wall and then pushes them, so they clank and crash to the ground to form a new, random-within-limits composition. “Initially I thought it didn’t work – you can’t mix geometry and chaos. But then I started to think: instead of these being antagonistic ideas, what if they are complementary? Then you create something new.” Building upon Venet’s multidisciplinary art practice spanning six decades, his newest series is EVENT uses generative programs exploring the interplay of randomness and unpredictability in digital art, allowing collectors to instantly generate a never-before-seen output upon purchase through the artist’s algorithm. EVENT marks the Venet’s debut digital art collection and the second release in the Sotheby’s Metaverse Gen Art Program. Discover more in our link in bio.

I am pleased to announce EVENT (2024) together with @sothebys . EVENT (2024) is my first Generative Art Collection, comprising 500 algorithmic artworks, and embraces blockchain technology, allowing collectors to mint a never-before-seen output of my proprietary algorithm in a dynamic and interactive experience. Algorithmic systems are a great tool that open up a vast field of experiments and innovation for artists to generate compositions and configurations that are surprising for their originality and that only chance can create. The exploration of Chance, Entropy, Order and Disorder have been overarching themes in the last six decades of my work, across diverse mediums such as sculpture, painting, drawing, poetry, sound, design and photography. Premier artiste, avec Nils-Udo, à visiter Lascours il y a 10 ans, alors que la « Belle au bois dormant » croulait sous les lianes, c’est grâce à Bernar Venet que les intérieurs retrouvent aujourd’hui une nouvelle vie, avec un mobilier exceptionnel, sculpté dans l’acier, dont le minimalisme vient souligner les formes de l’architecture, dans un dialogue / rupture audacieux. Un geste radical : l’expérience de vivre dans une œuvre d’art total, où les lignes droites d’une vaste bibliothèque, contrastent avec les lignes courbes d’une longue table monacale, suivant les voûtes de la salle à manger d’origine. New installation views from Chengdu, where @bernarvenetstudio is participating in the Chengdu Biennale 2026, ‘Pulse of Life’ (8 February–23 August 2026), on view at the Chengdu Art Museum in Tianfu Art Park. Inside the museum, three works are presented: ‘Pile of Coal’ (1963), ‘Black Mirror’ (1963) and ‘Saturated Poems’ (2018).
