this is a subak.
the ancient veins that carry water to the rice fields.
water that feeds the land, the farmers, the food, and ultimately us.
plastic has become part of the earth here.
buried so deep it now lives within the soil itself.
and we still ask where the plastic goes.
it goes into the water.
into the food.
into us.

from kore, the patriarch, and nalu, the matriarch
came a tribe of five
including two sets of twins
playful, curious, a little mischievous
yet gentle and full of affection
fearless by nature
always finding their way, even in the heights

he was royalty
and loyalty
always by his mate’s side
always at ease with guests, dogs, horses...
as if he understood
that we are all meant to belong
some lives considered small
are never insignificant
he will be missed

THE LODGE IN THE WOODS -A small lodge hidden in the forest in Bali, created by Bernard Tao—with a minimalist poured concrete aesthetic that quietly echoes his past at Calvin Klein.
At first, it feels like a design statement.
Clean lines. Restraint. Space.
But that’s not what makes it different.
What makes it different is the life he chose to build.
He stepped away from the fashion world to create an animal sanctuary and a working garden—where guests live simply, close to the land, and even pick what they eat for dinner.
There’s no excess. No performance.
Just a very clear set of priorities.
And that’s what stayed with me.
Not the design—but the intention behind it.
Places like this aren’t about escape.
They’re about redefining what matters—and building a life around it.
This is what I’m exploring in the series—places around the world where people are choosing to live differently, and what that reveals about how we might want to live now.

ONCE WE WERE..
children who had not yet learned fear
like horses who had never been shaped by it.
there was no past to hold onto
no future to worry about…
only the fullness of being here.
so when they meet,
there is no barrier to cross.
only freedom.
no control
no doubt
only trust, presence,
and something pure passing between them.
perhaps this is what real connection means…
when nothing stands in the way.

IN A BROKEN WORLD…
THEY KNOW WHAT WE FORGOT
i have always felt this…
animals carry something we have lost
they come without ego,
without the need to prove to be more
they live by instinct
in trust
in presence
and perhaps that is why
being with them takes me to a safe space
when i look at the world we have built i ponder
so much power
so much noise
so much taken
and yet
so many are still left behind
with almost nothing
how did we move so far away from something so simple
kindness
gentleness
enough
and so i return again and again to the animals
because in them there is
only honesty
only presence
only love
and in the end…
maybe they are not the ones who need saving
maybe
they are here
simply to remind us
