Join us for a planting party at Blake Garden this Friday, April 24th! Come help build Blake Garden’s “Hypermeadow,” spend time outdoors, enjoy some pizza, and connect with the design/build community. We’ll have all the tools and plants, just come ready to get dirty!
In a webinar earlier this semester sponsored by Berkeley City Council Member Brent Blackaby (@councilmemberblackaby ) Master of Landscape Architecture students (@berkeleylaep_students ) in Professor Kristina Hill’s (@drkzhill ) studio presented fire-safe garden designs to residents of the Berkeley Hills, highlighting key strategies for adapting to new zone-zero regulations without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.
Several themes emerged, including rethinking outdoor spaces as rooms, replacing foundation plantings with planted islands, and using boulders, river rocks, colored gravel, tile, or other non-combustable materials for visual interest. More than 100 residents attended the one-and-a-half-hour webinar, and another 100 registered to receive the recording.
Blackaby thanked the students for inspiring his constituents to think creatively about how to harden their homes: “This has been a wonderful opportunity to explore zone zero designs that are fire-safe and beautiful,” he remarked. “There are many different paths for people to take.”

Thank you to all the artists ! We had an amazing gallery of 14 artists at the event, mediums ranging from photography to quilting to landscape design, and more! Each artist presented their piece and talked about the process, meaning, and importance of their work. We appreciate everyone who made the time to make, bring, and pin up their work, as well as to everyone who helped with the meticulous set-up and clean-up of the event.

“At a time when we see human rights being blatantly disregarded, community building becomes a political act. Immigrant America is a living and dignified part of our society whose rights must be advocated for and protected. This webinar will feature several panelists, covering different scales and call to actions, offering resources to advocate and protect the immigrant community and sparking collaboration.”
The goal of this webinar is to learn how to be an advocate, building acknowledgment and sharing experiences and resources, and to envision a collaborative network with ASLA chapters, affinity groups, universities and landscape architecture firms.
This event is organized by an active collaboration between El Merequetengue, network of Latin American landscape architects and designers; the private firms of TERREMOTO, TOPOPHYLA Landscape Architecture, Bethany Rydmark Landscapes, and CROW Landscapes; and by the local Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), including ASLA - Northern California, ASLA - Illinois, ASLA - New York, ASLA- Maryland, ASLA-Arizona, and ASLA - New York Upstate.

“Public Land, Public Space, Public Discourse”, presented by the Department of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning, aims to spark critical thinking about how perceptions of public space and land impact our disciplines. Academics, practitioners, writers, and thinkers will bring a range of perspectives to a semester-long discussion of public realms.
In this presentation, landscape architects Liz Einwiller, FASLA, and Sarah Kuehl, FASLA, principals of EinwillerKuehl Landscape Architecture, discuss how value is given to public space through spatial conditions and qualities and how landscape architects can advocate through design.
Time: Mar 2, 2026, Monday | 6:00 - 7:00pm
Location: 112 Bauer Wurster Hall
We look forward to seeing you.
