AI technology has become widely accessible, making it easier than ever to create convincing false images, audio and video — and far more difficult to trust what we see online.
Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Information, explains that human perception is no longer a reliable defense, as his research shows people are only slightly better than chance at identifying AI-generated content.
In this podcast, he discusses the rapidly accelerating landscape of generative AI and the unique threat it poses to our collective understanding of the world.

Announcing our 2026 Commencement Speaker! 🎓
Vera Zakem — California's first woman Chief Technology Innovation Officer and former USAID Chief Digital Democracy and Rights Officer — will deliver the commencement address at the UC Berkeley School of Information's Commencement on May 19.
Vera has spent her career championing technology that serves the public good, from shaping digital rights policy globally to leading California's AI agenda. Many of you may know her from her time this past year as an Executive Fellow in Applied Technology Policy here at the I School.
We can't wait to celebrate our 2026 graduates with her. 🌟
