Fúria Negra
Sitting in Pedra do Sal just felt different.
I learned it’s one of the oldest Afro-Brazilian communities, originally a Quilombo- a home for free and runaway slaves. Not too far from here is the port Valongo Wharf, where millions of captured Africans were brought over. Walking through that space, knowing what happened there, and imagining life so close from such a horrific passage still haunts me. To take it a step further, in photo 3 you’ll see what remains of ‘fat houses’ where Africans were kept and fed before being sold.
It’s difficult to wrap your head around it all.
At the same time, there’s so much life and joy there too. Samba music and dancing on Monday nights, great food on every street, school kids being kids freely… their culture and ancestors are alive in a real way.
Overall, this trip shifted something in me.
It reminded me why I even care about photography. I want to share stories that matter. The ones people don’t always talk about. The ones that carry black history forward.
And I strive to always root documentation with intention and truth.
Big shoutout to our guide Ryane and the reallly dope friends made along the way!✊🏾
