Meet Desiré van den Berg In ‘To Titels’, Amsterdam‑based photographer Desiré van den Berg shares the stories of three professional female skaters from different generations. Through personal portraits and meaningful locations, the series shows how women have helped shape the Dutch skate scene. Van den Berg photographed Laura Engel at the place where her skate journey began in the 1970s, Candy Jacobs in the skatepark she is building for future skaters, and Keet Oldenbeuving, whose international career reflects how the doors opened by earlier generations continue to matter today. See her work at the SK8GIRLS exhibition, on view until 31 May.

Deze week opende ik een beerput in mijn stories. Ik noemde een paar van mijn persoonlijke ervaringen met seksisme als fotograaf en vroeg naar die van jullie. Dit waren enkele van jullie antwoorden. Ik plaats dit nu hier omdat ik wil dat dit bewaard blijft. Gezien, gelezen, opgeslagen en gedeeld. Jullie talloze reacties bevestigden de ernst van dit probleem en het delen ervan heeft veel aandacht gegenereerd. Er staan nu afspraken om dit bespreekbaar te gaan maken (met hopelijk concrete vervolgstappen). Wordt vervolgd.

“It’s bad for your body, don’t you want children later?” My work ‘To titels’ is part of group exhibition ‘SK8GIRLS: skateboarding as an act of resistance’ at Melkweg Galerie that’s on view through May. SK8GIRLS highlights international female and queer skate communities from Ethiopia, India, Morocco, the Netherlands, the UK and the States, among others. For this series I portrayed three pioneering Dutch female skateboarders from different generations - Laura Engel, Candy Jacobs, and Keet Oldenbeuving - who each helped shape the history of, and pushed forward, women’s skateboarding in the Netherlands by winning title after title. (In the 1970s when the first championships took place in our country, the boys actually began protesting for girls to compete in a separate category after Laura Engel would beat them time and again) Special thanks to Fleurie Kloostra for the opportunity, freedom of execution and space, to Joël Manoppo for putting the effort in this beautiful edition of The Dreamers Magazine, to Milou Deelen for writing down each person’s story and to Laura, Candy and Keet for being such legends and letting me capture you!! Last year I traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, with researcher and journalist Sarah Bronkhorst for a profile piece on mayor Randall Woodfin. We followed him in the days leading up to the mayoral elections as he was campaigning for a third term in a city that became a defining battleground in the American civil rights movement in the 1960s. Watching him personally knock on doors or sat in a Pancake House to convince people to vote felt hugely powerful in such a historic context. What an absolute honor to have witnessed this. ‘Footsoldier against Trump’ The young, black mayor of Birmingham, Randall Woodfin, finds a blueprint in the 1960s for his resistance to the racist regime of Donald Trump. Introducing: Desiré van den Berg Desiré van den Berg is an Amsterdam‑based self‑taught photographer whose work blends documentary storytelling with personal reflection and social observation. ‘To Titels’ brings together the stories of Laura Engel, Candy Jacobs and Keet Oldenbeuving — three Dutch skaters from different generations whose experiences highlight the important, yet often overlooked, role women have played in the Dutch skate scene for decades. In the exhibition, Desiré’s photographs are accompanied by text by @miloudeelen , offering deeper insight into each skater’s journey and the legacy they continue to shape. SK8GIRLS: Skateboarding as an Act of Resistance opens on 6 March, 17:00–21:00, and will be on view from 7 March to 31 May at Melkweg Expo.
