Berat Bebek (they/them) is an actor, performer, and multidisciplinary maker. Their work moves between theater, drag, and cabaret, and is often personal, poetic, and socially charged.
Berat creates space for stories that are rarely heard and transforms themes such as shame, survival, and identity into something that is simultaneously raw and sparkling, where glitter and sorrow meet, and where recognition and solace can coexist.

One of the most important things I learned with therapy might be this. We are born with expectations, and then there is always a new one on the pile, either your own or the ones people put on you.
Today in therapy I said ‘I think I finally realised and embraced that I don’t have to be a superhero’. I don’t want to be someone that needs help with anything but sometimes I need help with stuff and that is okay, I don’t have to be this ideal amazing character as if I’m in a video game. There are some aspects I can change and there are some that I apparently can not, judging myself about those is something I learned in this world, so I am doing my best to unlearn it.
I suck at being free and I get stuck and don’t know what to do for example, so I started to put everything in my agenda and plan better, even if it’s an hour of ‘doing nothing’ I’m trying to plan it because it helps me, this is a tiny example cuz I ain’t gonna spill my whole life here but even this sometimes makes me feel like I am doing something wrong or I am not enough, but that is not the case. I’m cunty AND enough😗
So give yourself a hug today, allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them, you don’t have to be a superhero.

I am incredibly happy and proud that I could try out my new work for the new location opening of @shebangamsterdam last November. I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to break and still stand and still be true to yourself. This piece came from that place, it asks what happens when we stop fighting the pressure and start understanding that some things must split open before they grow. Performing it in community, in a room that felt safe was incredibly healing, and it became a reminder of my own power.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart @fertile_ruins_amsterdam_ and Institute of Trans Pleasure Trans Activism for organising a lovely night and inviting me to be a part of it. I am incredibly thankful for the community I have and that we continue to build it together 🥹🫶🏼❤️
