Conversation Guests:
1️⃣Shi Tou, director of We Are Here
Shi Tou: an artist working across painting, photography, video, documentary, and LGBTQ+ related creative practice. She is currently the co-coordinator of the China Queer Independent Film collective.
In 1992, she began her independent art practice at Yuanmingyuan Artist Village, China’s first community of independent artists. In 2000, she appeared on national television with Li Yinhe and Cui Zi’en to publicly discuss homosexuality, becoming the first lesbian to come out on public TV in China. She starred in Fish and Elephant (2001), the first lesbian-themed feature film from mainland China, which won awards at international film festivals in Venice and Berlin. She also served as the art director of the documentary Dream on the Wall (2010), which won Best Short Film at the Hong Kong Chinese Documentary Film Festival. Her works have been exhibited in Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United States.
2️⃣FJ, lead artist of “Drag Up!” Project
FJ:She/They. A socially engaged art practitioner, theatre maker, queer. Artistic Director of QueerChinaUK (not a hair dresser). Graduated with an MA in Applied Theatre from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London (2022), and an International Master of Artist Educator from ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands (2020).
From 2023-2025, she initiated and facilitated two seasons of “Drag Up! A Decolonising Drag Performance-Making project”. In 2023, they wrote, directed, and performed in TANA at the Edinburgh Fringe, and in 2024 served as a resident artist and facilitator for We Are ESEA Queer, an art residency programme at QueerBritain.
