From The Chinese Dust Bowl series, The Silk Road, Kashgar, Xinjiang It took three trips to Northwest China to create this series of photographs, which reveals a geographical region ravaged by desertification. The first trip was in 2006, the second in 2007, and the third one in 2009. It was an extraordinary journey, often to places where the inhabitants had never encountered a foreigner. With each trip, I ventured further west, in Xinjiang, towards Central Asia, lost in the dust. #prixpictetwater #prix Pictet #galeriehuguescharbonneau

After two hours of climbing we reached the top of the mountain where the fire was raging. As soon as we arrive, the smoke envelops us. We disappear and reappear somewhere else. Shovels, rakes and machetes are the basic tools used to fight the fire. After a few hours the fire was brought under control. I have to go back down before darkness sets in. Arriving at the base, I can barely see the trail. I have to be careful. Finally, I see lights, and at the edge of the village the women have gathered to offer food to those who went to fight the flames, enough to feed a battalion. I am amazed by the community spirit present in the village. #galeriehuguescharbonneau #calq #casa_sanagustin

Last year, while I was doing an artist residency in Oaxaca Mexico, I witnessed several forest fires. I joined the villagers to fight the fires and took some photos. 1, 2 Fire in San Agustín. Feu à San Agustín 3. Carmen showing me where the fire started. “Deserts cover 18% of China today. Of those, 78% are natural, while humans created 22%.” – Benoit Aquin   To mark #WorldWaterDay, we are honouring #PrixPictet 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 winner @benoit.aquin who documented one of the greatest environmental disasters of our time: The Chinese ‘Dust Bowl’.   “One hundred and eighty million people depend on the Yellow River. Hundreds of thousands of people have already been relocated”, he says.   🔗 See more of his work via link in bio.   #PrixPictetWater #Photography #PhotographyPrize   Credits: Benoit Aquin Untitled 05, 10, 04, 03, 2006 Series: The Chinese ‘Dust Bowl’ © 2007 Benoit Aquin.
