One of Edinburgh’s finest surviving examples of a traditional Victorian pub, it was one of the most requested on my social media before I made the trip for this book.

Opened in 1839, and refurbished in 1906, it is a masterpiece of mahogany woodwork, ornate brass fittings, stained glass windows a mirror.
Although now not working, the original service bells pushes are still displayed on the wall and I have since enjoyed many pints tucked in the tiny snug that has a separate entrance to the side of the main door.
One of a handful of pubs that are on a popular run for university students, I bumped into a bunch of lads all on a ‘bad shirt’ pub crawl with some absolute shockers amongst the Magnum PI lookalikes or the Phantom of the Opera frilly numbers.
