I don’t care if my kids ever do triathlon. One of the things I want them to take from my career in sport is that if you dream it up and work hard, you can achieve anything. I want them to pursue their passions, and my hope is that Courtney and I chasing ours inspires them to try new things, find what they love, and work hard to chase their goals.
What’s more important, the mechanical or metabolic efficiency?
Speaking strictly for Ironman, mechanical is the most important. In most cases you want the shoe that will help you maintain your form, and not be fighting the shoe the whole time. You won’t run fast once your form breaks down. This isn’t to say metabolic isn’t important, but I think we get caught up in only using the fastest things instead of the most efficient ones. And efficiency has different facets. It’s like only choosing the most aero position, and ignoring comfort or power output.
Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom @courtneymoveswell ! We love you, and appreciate all that you do! The kids are so lucky to have you as a mom!
Also a Happy Mother’s Day to my mom @mekanute for being an awesome Gigi as well!
Swimming can be the most frustrating, but also the most rewarding sport. When it clicks, you stop fighting the water and work with it. One of my favorite feelings is gliding through a calm body of water, just cutting along the surface.
It’s been awhile since swimming with a group, and I’m feeling more energized in the pool than ever. I’ve always believed that swimming builds the engine. When that engine is applied correctly, great things happen.

USA Triathlon is excited to announce that @wovebike is the Official Saddle Partner of USA Triathlon. You’ve seen pros like @gwenjorgensen , @rudyvonberg , @samgolong , @jasonwesttri , @benkanute , @elliot_bach_tri and many others riding Wove saddles, and with Wove’s new metal-railed offerings the saddles that the biggest names in triathlon trust are even more accessible.
Wove’s team members have been USA Triathlon annual members since the mid 1990s and Wove bike saddles were created out of a desire to race USA Triathlon races on a more comfortable saddle. It’s come full circle and Wove can give back to the USA Triathlon community not only with game-changingly comfortable saddles, but with knowledge to help you race and train with more comfort and power.
Keep nutrition simple. I practice it in training, and push the g/hour of carbs higher to train the gut to handle this. I lean towards a higher fat metabolism than most. I also go by feel. I have forced high carbs and made myself push them during the race, but I have learned to listen to my stomach. High carbs and energy is awesome, but pushing that and feeling sick isn’t fast.
While this is an exaggeration, I see way too often the most aggressive head position or fit posted to Instagram only to see race photos that look almost nothing like the fit.
Real world application is the most important thing. Wind tunnel testing, or any aerodynamic testing is great, but it has to be sustainable.
Some of this comes from making reasonable fit adjustments over time, and the other part is training to sustain the position both on and off the bike (mobility and stability).
Create your fit for your goals. A 10km TT can be the most aggressive, but for Ironman you need balance. And be honest with yourself about the ability to hold your position. Too often I thought I was fast when I was able to hold just long enough for the numbers to be good, and then in the race not be able to get to that same position.
Happy birthday to @courtneymoveswell !!
Another year filled with amazing adventures.
Another year topping the last one.
Another year being the best mom, wife, and best friend.
While the years pass by, the only way you could tell is by the memories stacked. You are the glue that holds our family together and makes every day special. Words seem to fall flat when I search for the right ones to describe the meaning you have to us. We love you, and appreciate all you do for our family, and anyone lucky enough to be in your life. Here’s to good cake, presents, time with loved ones, and many more years making each better than the last.
After a taper and a very easy week, sometimes it feels like you are starting from scratch. The first few workouts back feel awkward, and it is easy to think all fitness is lost. Over the years, I’ve learned that it doesn’t work like that, and you start from a much higher fitness than after your true off season.
Now it’s time for a good training block to level up.
