Very happy to announce my collaboration with the Brontë church in Howarth, where 9 of my drawings are now being exhibited.
Howarth is not far from where I was born and I’ve had a long obsession with the works of the Brontës, so I’m honoured to be showing my work in the same building they are all buried in (except Anne, who is born in Scarborough). The father Patrick was the parson here and they lived in the parsonage on the church grounds, which is now the Brontë museum.
A series of 7 portraits of the sisters onto the title page from each of their books (plus two extras, a portrait of Branwell onto the title page from the excellent Gaskell biography and a portrait of the 3 sisters onto a collection of their poetry).
I actually drew a couple of the portraits in Howarth last year, including drawing Branwell’s portrait in his pub The Black Bull. I’ve also included some other photos I took of the town, including a view of the church from Charlotte Brontë’s bedroom window.
If you’ve seen the recent film and are interested in reading some more work by the sisters, the order in which I’ve added the books to this post is my favourites in order, although Shirley is the last one as it’s the only one I haven’t read yet, so the order will no doubt change at some point this year when I get to it.
50% of the sale of all of these drawings goes to the church and its upkeep.
